MTech steering wheel splines?
« on: August 04, 2009, 08:24:49 PM »
Searched and looked- Are there different splines ie fine/ coarse for different years for the MTech 1 steering wheel? Have the suggested spacer now going to be looking for the right wheel.

Picked up a nice 9+/ 10 Mtech while in So. Cal., didn't ask if it was from an E30 so I'm stuck with a coarse spline wheel that doesn't work,*!#**Q#$%!!
I'm new to E30's so I'm in the learning curve. I guess more searching and reading the forums is in my future to avoid dumb and $$ mistakes. Thanks for the help.

The fine spline wheel is definitely a midstream change in the e24/e28/e30's.  You can also get wheels from all later models to fit.  I'm not sure when the exact change happened, but my '89 525i non-airbag wheel is definitely fine spline.  The e30 'vert wheel I swapped is fine spline.  I'll be removing my airbag wheel from the '91 318i and I'm fully expecting the fine splines as well.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think BMW changed the wheels until they introduced dual-inflation airbags in '02 or so.  I suspect they'd all fit, YMMV.

Sorry to change the subject, but I'm thinking of removing my steering wheel w/airbag and changing to one w/o an airbag. Is there anything I should be aware of when I attempt the switch. For example, will the SRS light stay on?

SRS light:  Yes it will, I tried that this last weekend.

As far as splines, my 84 E28 is a coarse spline.

Ditto, or unplug the srs panel. Here's a helpful thread I used when installing a non-airbag wheel.

I just put in an M tech 1 wheel ($7 junkyard score) and just used washers.  I also recently put in a new dash and completely removed all the airbag stuff (just unplugged so it can be later reinstalled if so desired).

I did not use any spacers or the like but did put in a matching cruise control stalk and turn signal stalk to go with the 13 button OBC I put in.
