Hi all,

I am interested in bying MarkD's chip for my 1990 euro 318is. We have 95 and 98 octane here, will MarkD's 93 octane chip be ok? (I usually put 95 octane in the 318is)

I've ran accross this :

US 91 = 95 RON
US 93 = 98 RON

Our euro SP95 (95 RON) would be an equivalent to the US 91.
If I am right, I should go for the 91 octane chip ?

I ordered the 91 octane chip, but the US spec chip wouldn't work in my '89Euro 318is. The DME part number for both markets is the same, but the PROM numbers are different regarding vehicles with or without the cat/O2 sensor.

I'd recommend you pull the DME cover off and check the part number of your PROM. The US Spec eprom # is 1.267.356.378 and MarkD's chip will work. The Euro eprom # is 1.267.356.214 and unless Mark is marketing a euro chip with that part number, you'll have to look elsewhere.

I stumbled upon information regarding PROM numbers on a German website at the same time this thread was going hot and heavy: http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7757

Refer to post #13 and then look at your car to see if the referenced single black plug on your car is connected or disconnected.

If disconnected, the vehicle has a cat and uses the 02 sensor to regulate CO.

If connected (like mine was), the DME uses the idle speed CO potentiometer and Mark's chip didn't work.

If you see my other post in that thread, I wrongly thought simply disconnecting or connecting the plug was all I needed to do. I eventually bought a Euro chip on Ebay and am quite happy with it.

I still have my MarkD chip and can't wait to buy another E30 318iS when I return to the states:D.

If I can find one of the files or a chip for a Euro 318, I can insert the maps.   I'll start looking around.   I've been busy writing code, and hadn't checked in here since May 27.   I'll come around more often.

Happy coincidence that i stumbled across this post today :D

I have a similar problem. I bought a chip from Mark for my Euro 318is and it didn´t work. I didn´t know if it was that the car had a problem or if there was a difference between US and Euro versions that made it incompatible. So i put the chip aside for a while and forgot about it.
A few days ago i got an e-mail for Mark regarding my troubles. I´ve e-mailed him back and hopefully we can work something out.
While i realise the market is much smaller in Europe and Mark is relatively unknown over here, based on his work and what people have said  
regarding his product it would still be great to have his chip available to us.

I don´t know about the rest of you guys with Euro model IS´s but my car came from the factory with NO-catalytic converter. Anyone else want to add to this?

I think the chip from euro cars was not a 175, so that could be a factor?
Also yes since you have no cat, there is a different config regarding euro cars.
There is a thread on here about a hot start issue on US cars,

Does this configuration change imply that the chips config would need to be diff too?
I am not sure the symptoms encountered, so perhaps I missed something :)

what do you mean with 'it didn't work'? The car wasn't starting... ?

I've got a Belgium euro 318is with catalytic converter, black plug disconnected and the chip works (the car runs with it. 5hp performance gain measured today). But after not even 3000km's after I refurbished the engine and redid the timing bits, the engine started dieseling and I had not enough oil pressure in the head.

I don't know if the chip caused this, I actually don't think so. I will open and check the engine when I have some time.

It wouldn't work because you have no cat. But not every euro M42 is without cat. Most here in Belgium are delivered with cat. I'm going to look into this tomorrow. I do feel performance gain with the chip, but i'm not sure if it's doing the right thing or not.

Haven´t checked this in a while :o  

My car has no catalytic converter from the factory. It was imported to Spain from Germany before the IS was officially available.  
After installing the chip i started up the car...it would run very roughly for a few seconds and die. I tried this a few times and fearing doing damage to the car i just took the chip out and put it away.
I may just end up selling the chip and put money into improving other areas of the car.

i would think the 93 octane chip would work? as the OXY sensor is before the cat... i hae the 93 octane chip and the timing advance is a bit steeper but so much worth it but thats just my 2 cents..
i dont know a lot about the euro 318is tho so im not completely sure
