Fog/Driving light switch wiring socket.
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:41:29 AM »
Looking to add a pair of fog lights to my 91 E30 vert.  I found the pre wired electrical connectors for each side for the lights themselves just below the headlights.  What I could not locate is a prewired plug for the actual light switch behind the dash.

Is there actually one?  If there is, its not clearly visible.  Just want to know if I need to route and wire myself or if it's already there somewhere...

Additionally, aside from the switch and hooking up the two lights is there any additional fuses or relays I'll need to add?  Assuming that the additional lights were a prewired add on option and hoping that's actually true...

Thanks!  Rich

The fog light switch connector at the lower left of the instrument cluster opening, switch to its lower left.

You'll need 7.5A fuses at 29 and 30, and a four-prong with diode relay in K8. Typical fog light relay case color is black.

Does it have to be a fog light relay or will another orange 4 prong relay work? I think I have a bunch of '474' relays.  They are typically the other ones in the fuse box.

Thanks!  Rich

I haven't stumbled upon an explanation yet, and I'm concerned I'd break something if I tried a 474 relay in the K8 slot. I bought a fog light relay from bavauto.com (the one you see in the photo), but now tend to get spare relays from Vegas salvage yards at $2.50 each.

I'm with you.  I picked up a couple of hella relays from the yard that were in the K8 sockets.  So, I have all the parts, just no socket...

Strange that I was in to replace the steering wheel and replace the instrument cluster, so I was in a good position to find the fog light socket.  No where to be found.  I believe the socket has two green wire/yellow stripe wires and one white wire to the socket according to other cars I saw at the JY.  (I could find those sockets on other cars.)   The PO did sterio and alarm wiring in the same vicinity and I hope someone didn't snip the socket out.

Anyway,  I have a prestine dash I'll drop in in the fall and look again then.

Thanks much!

Found the fog light socket.  It was taped to a wiring bundle just above the clutch pedal.  I'll route it to the fog light switch area when I put my repaired instrument cluster back in place as it's fairly tight and the wire is short.

Excellent detective work. Those previous owners can be so sneaky at hiding stuff.:)

Follow-up: When I stumbled on a 3/90 318is at the salvage yard, it wasn't ordered with fog lights. There was no fog light switch below the instrument panel, and there were plastic covers in the valance in the place of actual fog lights.
