these engines are both from the saem GENERAL M40 family, but the M43 is a single cam motor and the M42 is a twin cam. This also means that the M43 is an 8 valve motor, while the M42 is a 16 valver. The M42 makes more hp and torque than the M43, although the M43 is a more advanced (tech wise) motor than the M42. The M43 is the single cam version of the M44, the M40 is the single cam version of the M40 (IIRC). the M43-(TU) has the highest torque per litre of any two valve per cylinder engine so it is sort of respectable although it makes just 118hp!(valvetronic).
