I stick with known manufacturers chips. Many of the ebay chips are copies of these chips, and likely fine, but it's essentially stolen. I would rather support a company to inspire them to continue to offer products for bimmers so I can keep putting go-fast parts on my cars.

Watch that your high octane fuel does not have ethanol added. Best I can get (non race) by me is 91 no eth. The 93 has 10% ethanol, and the car runs MUCH better on the pure 91. There is a station about 10 miles from my work that has 106 on a regular pump...

Sweet went and checked that out and my cover is falling all apart :(... So i guess i need to unscrew the 2 gold bolts and pull out? Im don't wanna do that until im ready to buy and install the chip. Does the chip get soldered on the ecu?

Your car is a OBD1? EWS? What ECU # are you running?

for any m42 ecu the chip is seated(not soldered) in a 28Pin slot on the motherboard like in the image below

Hey guys. On my quest for a little pep on the cheap I'm considering an ebay chip. I found this thread in the forum history and have gotten a good deal of info from it but I have a few more questions. Are the chips you're talking about this one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-PERFORMANCE-CHIP-89-92-E30-318IS-IC-M42-ECU-175-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53e092c4d6QQitemZ360250000598QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories have any of you used this chip? Also, many of you have said you noticed a gain and it's worth the money but just want to ask again. What kind of gains (Estimation) would you say you received power and mpg wise?

I have a much better solution for a chip that will yield much better results

The important thing to note is "cheap".  I'd love one of yours or a MarkD.  But 200 bucks is a lot of money to some people, including myself.  Hence the ebay chip consideration...  Hard on the heart but not on the wallet :)

Yeah, I'm sure yours is better but I am on a tight budget. Can anyone attest to the ebay chip's gains? Comments?
