According to the EPA, the 1991 318is gets 19mpg combined.

So the question is, who is going to trade in their 318 for a $4500 voucher toward a new car?

19mpg combined? I did read that when researching this car, figured it was trade protectionism. Not that I'd sell...what else out there is anything like this car? It's such a shame that BMW doesn't make cars like this any more...

Wait a minute, I get better than that.

So let me get this straight. A guy with a 85 Buick Grand National is going to sell his pride and joy for a Toyota Prius. HA HA HA HA . I just want to say HA. Some dumb fuckin' redneck is gonna get swindled out of a great piece of machinery. Look all guys and girls I work with have big Ford and Chevy trucks and cars. As a matter of fact my immediate supervisor drives a D-TECH Mustang that will suck the paint off the House.
He constantly badgers me about my little Natasha. He calls it the Nazi mobile. But in the end I have the last laugh all the way to the pump. And I do it with better built machinery. I have 250k miles on her and she runs like a top. Even if i won the lottery, I probably wouldn't sell it. I would tune it up something beautiful. Out.

According to what I've read, the trade in vehicles COMBINED fuel rating must be 18mpg or less to qualify. That means the 318is does NOT qualify.

Older Trade-In Vehicles:
* Must be in drivable condition;
* Have been continuously insured to the same owner for at least one year immediately prior to trade-in;
* Manufactured in model year 1984 or later; and
* Have a combined fuel economy of 18 mpg or less.

I don't see why anyone would want the car that they currently drive to be considered a clunker unless indeed it was one and that you wanted to trade it in using this program. Not something to be proud of.

This program is not aimed at those of us who maintain and take some pride in our cars. Basically it's a giveaway program for people with a rusted out Chevy or Buick or nearly wrecked pickup that is worth at most $500. Most of these folks probably paid no more than $1500 for it. Essentially they get at least a $3500 rebate for any new vehicle that gets only a couple of mpg improvement. Wonder what the cost-benefit ratio is for that.

Besides, if someone decided their unmaintained e30 is worth $4500 voucher toward something that gets 24mpg, let them. Other than race cars, or something to fully restore, who would really want to go near an unmaintained one?

I doubt the program will do all that well, people who drive old cars eligible for the program are either a) doing it because they can't afford anything newer or b) don't WANT anything newer.

The number on the site is a mistake, it used to be higher.
It comes nowhere near 19mpg. If you get 19, your car has serious problems or you have made significant changes to the engine, and even then, some get better mileage after getting more power.

With bad plugs and tires while driving the wheels off it on street it never went below 24mpg. In decent tune, the car gets 26mpg at 100mph.

I get around 26mpg avg. I just installed some new plugs so it may go up from there.

Fuel tank holds 16.6 gallons of fuel.

Yes, the number used to be higher. All cars had higher numbers. They changed the way mileage is calculated about a year ago. 19 is correct for our cars.
