Author Topic: Water pump ALMOST removed... help w/ rest, pls (Read 4037 times)

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Like most, my water pump did not want to come out. I hammered and pried it out... mostly. The bottom half decided it still wanted to be stuck. Any advise on how to get the other half out w/o damaging the housing?

Currently, it's soaking in as much PB Blaster as I could squirt in there...

Since most of you already know what the pump should look like, I've only attached a photo of what came out.

did you try to "push" it out using the bolts as instructed the bently manuel? there are 2 threaded holes on the pump, one on top the other on the bottom... tried to use longer bolts to push it out???

Yessir. I've read the Haynes manual and a couple threads here regarding removal. Those 2 6M bolts pushed out a 1" hole around the bolt. I had to hammer and crowbar it out. The problem is that only the exterior portion made it out.

Notice that on the right, it's missing the internal portion of the pump...!

I've tried a bit of chiseling with a hammer and small screwdriver and only managed to make scratches and chip off a small piece. I'm thinking my next option is to carefully... VERY carefully... dremmel the inside of the remainders partially to weaken it, force it to break with chiseling, and take it out in peices. Hopefully someone will come up with a better idea for me by tomorrow!!!

you could try to heat the hole, and cool the part that's stuck.... but if you heat the hole, be VERY carefull NOT to overheat the head and crack it... I beleive that there's some stuff that you can buy at a hardware store that "freezes" parts. maybe it's all it needs to be hand removed?!

Can you post a pic? I was wondering if you could drill & tap a bolt into it, then pull it out. I don't know what it looks like, haven't been in there yet.

Huh. I supposeI could run the engine a bit to heat and then spray the innards with alcohol or something to cool it slightly?

And I like thte tap idea. Was thinking abuot it, but I don't have the tools for that. I suppose I'll need them eventually, though...

or you could try to just take a hammer and "chisel" to hit it on the side (to make it rotate) to free it up and then just try to pull it??

Got it! Studying the anatomy more, tapping wasn't going to work. I decided to grind down to create a weak spot I could break it it in have (like througha circle's diameter). It worked. Wish Ihad done it sooner 'cus there would be so much less scarring inside there....

Here are some poor quality (phone) pics.

In the bottom middle - that's some metal dust floating from the grinding. All the white lines are the scratches. Also notice the damage at the lip. Hopefully it's not enought o cause leaking or anything else.

You should use a soft wire brush (bronze) to clean all the calcium build up before you install your new pump. I don't know if you know this but BMP Design and Bavarian Autosport offer the replacement pumps that have the Stainless Steel impellar vs. the plastic one that came with it. Good luck and just to let you know I have replaced two pumps in my 91 318is.

Thanks for that tip. I was thinking of sanding by hand (don't have anything else). Is this not advised?
