SPOONU - E30 318is project
« on: June 08, 2009, 04:09:22 AM »
Hello all this is my car.

Bit of a history to this point. I have owned the car for a little over a year. I bought it as a stock 318I with an m40 motor.

Since then I swapped in an M42, new clutch and short shifter, it has a 2.5inch exhaust and rides on H&R springs along with bilistein shocks all round, m3 castor arm bushes and new lower contol arms. Braking is taken care of by slotted discs and greenstuff pads. Eyelids, tinted clear indicators, tint and a modest wing round up the outside and i have fitted led parkers and xenons in the headlights and fogs. Interior just has an aftermarket steering wheel, smg gearknob (haha) and black suede boots with m stitching along with a modest sound system. I switch between a set of 18s and a set of 15s for wheels depending on mood. haha

Now comes the supercharging Bought a kit over ebay that a bloke had been developing for his own car, using a supercharger off a new Mini Cooper S (eaton m45) and Carbon fibre piping. (shown here on his car)

Also bought an intercooler,

and boost guage.(but not mounted yet)

This is where i am up to, so now im trying to figure out what else i need to do. I have also bought some 570cc injectors which from what i can find equal 55lb/hr. I plan on decompressing the motor to around 8.5:1 and running a megasquirt with Map sensor.

Thanks for looking through all that, all comments appreciated. :)

BeamerIS - Thanks!
Vladi - I know what you mean. I have been having a few thoughts about going turbo instead. I think ill get every thing set up with the super charger then maybe change over to turbo with more boost. :)
TRUSLEEPR - Thanks for the comment. Ill try to keep this updated. As it is those photos are at least 4 or 5 months old, ill take some current ones this weekend. :) there is no developer of the kit as such. I bought this from a guy who was making it for his own car. He got the piping custom made and made the braket for the charger himself. There is a kit available from a company called downing atlanta to fit these motors though. :)

That's some nice car there...very clean.  Let us know how the supercharger works out.  I'll be messing around with a Megasquirt myself on my bike later this year, I'm still collecting parts too.

Nice work!

NICE! how much did it cost you to convert your M40 to M42?

I am in Sydney too, the E30 318IS market is soo dry right now :(

Desktop Dave - Thanks for the kind words. Been sourcing some more bits and peices for it. Let me know how you go with the megasquirt.
TONTON - Thanks mate. It wasnt all that much actually. $1000 bought me a rear ended 318is with new clutch, a bit of head work and it had the slotted discs and greenstuff pads on it too. Plus alot of other little bits and peices. As far as the actual conversion, it only really cost me a bit over a day of my time. If you need to hire things like the engine crane etc it will obviously cost more...
HATER-PROOF - Thankyou.

I think I've re-allocated the megaquirt for a bike project.  It's a Honda with the worst carb setup I've ever seen.  I am interested in forced induction on these cars though - keep us updated...

Its not fun to do, we do it alot with the race cars we build at the university, alot of fabrication and megasquirt is difficult to use for high rpm applications. We are currently working on doing an efi conversion on an old honda 250cc using AEM with an intended redline of 22000rpm.

What kind of angle sensors are you using for that kind of rpm?

as in crank angle? we are using a custom external 36-1 trigger wheel and hall effect sensor, then for cam timing we put small rare earth magnets into the side of the intake cam gear and used another hall effect sensor

So you're the one who got it!

I was bidding on it as well and then I got retrenched a day before it ended.

What is the quality of the piping like?

Thanks gansta. The piping is actually really nice, only thing i can fault with it is that the ends that go to hoses are not flared. My mates vl turbo had this and it would pop a hose off when coming on boost every now and again. Very annoying. The flare would prevent this. So i have to figure out what to do there.
