Lube for bushings, etc...
« on: July 19, 2006, 09:39:32 PM »
So, I need to lubricate the metal ball on my shift linkage (the one that sits in the cup on the shift arm).  I ordered a mini lubrication set from Bavarian Autosport since I also need to lube my poly bushings and don't want to uninstall them to lube them...  that's basically the kinda thing these syringes were designed for.

It's really pretty cool.  I have the small set, but it contains all the following..   Lyth-Moly Grease, Silicone Lubricant, High-Grade Oil, and Anti-Seize Compound.. as well as a bunch of different sized tips.

Check it out.

My question is, which of these should I use for the shift lever ball & socket??

I presume I could use either and be fine, but I guess which one would be best.  I'm thinking the Lythium-Moly Grease, but not sure.

For the poly bushings, what is typically used?  I'm guessing the Silicone Lubricant.

Any input appreciated.

I wouldnt use either.  The moly lube is for engine assembly.  The Silicone lubricant is for suspension bushings.

I used the some of the red Mobile Synthetic grease you get in a grease gun tube for the ball in my shifter and it works perfect.

It's Moly/Lithium grease.  I think it can be used for many general purposes, not just engine components.  I think there was some white lithium grease in there initially.

So, one person says not to use either of these...  Anyone else care to comment on what to use in the ball in the shifter cup?

I'm leaning towards that Moly/Lithium stuff.  I don't see how it could hurt.

i agree with you on the moly in the shifter and silicone on the bushes. simply because i've never heard of it being done the other way
