best size, type of turbo for the M42
« on: June 03, 2009, 09:04:58 AM »
Hi,
What type of turbo would you say is the best suited for the M42
I know the HX35 holset is good for the M20 but for the M42???

I am in France and have access to a lot of smaller turbos but I'd rather go for a KKK, Garrett, Holset, turbonetics, or something like that.

Size of the wheels would help too :)

Thanks a lot

Franck

If you don't mind me asking, how'd you do the exhaust manifold?  DIY, EBay, professional?

Thanks, I was actually looking at a Garett GT28R, what size flange is on it?

For the mani, I already have a M50 modified manifold. just like the ultimate budget build ;)
Any other suggestions for turbos??

I would bet that the K03/K04 off of a VW would be a nice match for the m42

Actually, I'd like something that has a rectangular flange, since i already have the manifold and don't really want to cut and weld or anything like that.
Size wise, anybody know what would be the right housing size, wheel size? etc...
I'm just trying to get an idea of what turbo i should pick. I have a turbo from a 324td, and it seems a bit small to me, I don't want to spool at 5k rpm either.

Thanks for the help

RIMS-just my opinion, 17's are too small & 19's may give you some type of radious problems.  Unless? you're willing to spark up thee old torch:>).

Ok, here are some more details :)
I'm shooting for 200hp more or less, probably no more than 6-7psi on stock internals. It will be a weekend car, not my dd but not shooting for drag, drift, maybe a little track to play around but nothing serious.

the thind is that I shoot at rebuilding the engine in the near future and I want to be able to crank up the psi to 10-12 and reach closer to 230-240hp once the engine is healthier.

hope that helps.
Here we can find a lot of Garrett and KKK turbos. I've been look at the k26 from KKK or something like a gt25r garrett. but I'm sure there are many other options.???

I have an E30 with m42 engine too and I will turbocharge it soon so I will tell you what I will do and I hope to help. first I inform you that I buld it for drift so I need a small turbo boosting at low rpm and can provide us much hp us can be possible with just reprogramed ecu. Thats why I choose an IHI rhb5 turbo from Maserati Ghibli Cup! small, cheap and japanese!!! this turbo can boost from low 2000rpm and can provide 200+ hp EASYLY and I knew it because I have used this turbo at past in a Daihatsu Charade GTti getting 224hp from just 1000cc!!! this is what I will do and this is my opinion
