notes from my 2.5' exhaust
« on: May 31, 2009, 03:49:42 AM »
Hi
my E30, M42 with DASC was running with M40 1.6l exhaust system ever since i installed my M42.
at first i only had to modify the piping to fit the M42 headers, car was running nice and along with Sebring muffler at the end it even sounded nice.
mid section muffler was the stock M40 original muffler (from 1990)

since i've added the DASC to the car i felt like the car would breathe better with some larger diameter exhaust.
after much reading here and on R3V and E30thech i decided to go with a 2.5 stainless pipes.
i had to get a new mid section muffler - at the local store they had no stock 2.5 one, so they built for me one out of two small 2.5 mufflers.
running the pipes underneath the car was a pain, i had no skill of welding before - so for me it was learning while doing the whole process (as it shows on the welding themselves)
yesterday i had my first test drive with the car with the new exhaust.
the most significant difference is the pull on the higher revs -
before the remake of the exhaust the car used to lose power at around 5.5K RPM, with the DASC installed the difference was even more noticeable.
with the new larger pipes the car pulls nicely all through the RPM range, resulting in a much quicker encounter with the rev. limiter at 5th speed.

additional gain was the the lower -mid RPM, where it feels a bit more beefier, with a little more power.

sound wise - the car is loud.
im not sure how louder it is than before - but it is louder. i can go quiet if i match the gas pedal to the rpm exactly - this would result in the car cruising quietly, but when i press that pedal - the car will return to making its roar:)

that's my 2cents for 2.5 inch stainless on my car.

I'm all stock, but have full 2.5inch piping to a magnaflow hi-flow cat and ending with a magnaflow muffler. I love it! It's raspy over 3k RPM's when it's cold, but when it's warm, it screams all the way to redline.
