Buyers Guide?

Howdy.. I'm currently looking at a 318is non-sunroof. (CL:
http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/1160112997.html
) I already e-mailed the guy and at least he is responsive and open to answering questions with real answers. The car has been resprayed (which he doesn't know if they did the whole car); doesn't know about the rear main seal, but I am awaiting more photos of the car.
My general question (and I did a search both on R3V and M42) is that what are the common problems with the M42 engine; other than the timing chain tensionor, chain, and rear main seal. Do the rod bearings go out (like the S14 engines) or have oil starvation?
Lastly; I understand the market is somewhat off right now; he is asking $3500; is that the normal price for a clean? (I've seen anywhere from $2000 to $5500).
Thanks for the help...

I'm no expert having bought my first 318is last week. It sounds much nicer than the one I bought, but $3500 still seems slightly high if there are some areas in doubt (power steering, motor, etc.). I would jump at 2500 and consider 3000.

Yeah; I still have to see the car in person and the new photos. I am wondering how long has he owned, what has been done, etc; which may or may not knock down the price. He does state he is not a rush to sell it; so we'll see.
Thanks for the post.
