Water pump plus other engine repairs?

I recently purchased a 91 318is with 165,xxx miles. The water pump needs to be replaced. What other parts/precautions should be checked when the water pump is replaced? Besides the leaky pump the engine runs smooth and pulls in all gears. Im new to these engines and any feedback would be great.

All the fluids have been changed, as well as, the air filter.

When you break the water pump while trying to remove it don't worry about it, just get a block of wood and a pry bar, also since the car is new to you and you don't know the work done previously, you should replace your t-stat, and check your fan clutch. If it were my car I would also replace/modify the hoses under the intake manifold and remove the throttle heater plate.

I fig that the thermo should be replaced. The fan clutch doesnt really have play so i guess im ok. Thanks again for your input. Just trying to prevent big problems by fixing the small ones.

What is the best way to tell if the fan clutch is bad?

When the car is at operating temp, use a rolled newspaper to try to stop the fan.  If you can stop the fan then the clutch is bad.

I just looked at your signature and now I'm afraid of whats underneath my manifold. With 165,000 miles, the underside of the manifold must look much worse that yours. Now i need to grow a set and start taking things apart. As i was reading your different threads i was amazed at what you did with the car. Nice job, very impressive.
