ABS noise when first stopping
« on: April 26, 2009, 12:54:23 AM »
Hey guys, after some time trying to hunt down a good 91 4 door with an m42 I think I managed to luck out with something out of San Diego.

Anyhow, the car's only real worrisome problem is the ABS pump makes a noise as though it's cycling (a farting type sound is best I can think to describe it).  Now I've been in a few of these, driven Sheepdogs quite a few times and NEVER heard this noise.

I get it only when I first use the brakes (not hard), maybe 1 more time right after and then never hear it again.  They seem to work fine, I haven't noticed if the ABS is functioning, but since the ABS and brake lining light are on I assume not.

The previous owner recently had the rotors turned and new pads on, how claims to not have bled the system after changing out the pads though.

Any idea's?  I've tried working my google-fu with little luck as it seems most people just pull the bump.

Thanks,
Dustin

I pumped all new fluid through the car, even going so far as to have the engine running for some of it to get fluid out of the pump.  Seems to have cured the problem as I've gone 2 days with only the occasional sign of the problem.

I haven't seen an ABS light kick on yet though :D

The sound you hear is normal some cars are just louder or more noticable then others its just the abs system cycleing the pump sort of a test to make sure eveything is working properly when you first apply the brakes after starting.

Hmm I never noticed it on my brothers car.

The car now has an intermittent issue with the ABS light coming on and the brake feeling is very random.

Still it's better than it was.  I'm guessing some how there is air in the lines.
