Anyone ever replace the brushes in the blower motor?
« on: April 25, 2009, 05:52:12 PM »
Curious - mine still works, but I have it out in my hands, and the brushes are getting pretty short - less than 1/4". I hate to put it all back together and have to take it apart again in the foreseeable future, but I don't see that I can get the old brushes out and new ones in without removing the squirrel cages. And 20-year-old plastic fan blades pressed on to a motor shaft don't seem to be the smartest thing to try to pry off, let alone rebalancing them.

Can it be done without removing the squirrel cages, and what size are the replacement brushes?

Anyone?  :)

I once asked an electric motor rebuilder if they would change out the brushes for my blower and they said that they wouldn't do it.  I'm sure it can be done but at what cost?  I ended up just getting another blower out of a low mileage car...that was cheaper than buying a new one.

How do the brushes look?

I don't know, I'll look for you, but I was suggesting I could sell you the whole blower

Right, but if your brushes are the same as my brushes, what would the point of that be?  :)

My motor still works, I am just thinking ahead to when I want to pull the blower motor out again because the brushes failed and not coming up with a date anytime in the near future.

This is more so I don't have to pull the damned thing out again than because it doesn't work. I have the motor out anyway, I may as well take care of it now.
