What's involved w/ R&Ring a heater core?
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:21:50 AM »
Is there any online tech links or info as to how to R&R a heater core in a 318 (or E30)?

Does the heater control valve also have to get replaced, or does it only get replaced if there is an absolute issue with it?  How would one know if it needs replacing as well?

Any tips/tricks/shortcuts to doing such a repair, please post 'em up....

I have the same question about the heater valve.... I'm not getting full heat output.

Here's an r3vlimited post on Replacing the Heater Core.  Looks like they made it accessible so that the dash doesn't need to come out...

...and a more complete thread

I have to do that myself, yet another spring project.  Looks like it just slides into the driver's side.  I'd also replace the o-rings or whatever BMW fastened the valve with.  Good time to flush the system too...before you start on the heater core, that is.  Then you just get water in the cabin instead of coolant mix.

I'd say if you have heat, your valve is good.  They're really overpriced for what they are.  Keep in mind that there are two types of valve too...metal & plastic.  They aren't interchangeable.  Mine looks like this, I'm told you just remove the #17 screws and #10 bolts:
