Rebuilding 318is
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:58:13 PM »
So, I just got my 91 318is and I'm wanting to rebuild the motor Within the year, not rushing anything, I'm 16 and honestly know close to nothing about rebuilding a motor. This is me asking you for a list of parts I need to research or factual websites that i can use to learn some things before I try rebuilding my motor. Anything about the 318is would help. I'm planning on building it for auto-x or drifting (not sure yet) so anything about the suspension and such would help too. I'm not in any hurry but I would like to know whats going on/what parts do what before I start anything. Any help Is greatly appreciated!

Why do you want to rebuild it?  How many miles does it have and what's your compression like?

Ken, It has about 105,XXX miles ( like i said, I'm not in any hurry. Still has alot of life in her) Compression is 10:1.

Will, do you honestly think I haven't googled it?

EDIT: I just found the "Links for m42" thread so hopefully i can get some info from that.

I was wanting to know what your actual cylinder compression is for each of them, not the ratio.

A rebuild at 105k is a waste of time and money.

You may want to take the timing covers off and inspect the chain guides though.

I understand it being a waste of money right now but I'm not planning to rebuild it for awhile. Just looking for good factual sites. Most likely doing suspension and other small things this summer but within a year or two i'd like to put rebuild and turbo it. Probably should have mentioned that in the first post.

Will, I appreciate you trying to help. I did find a few usefull links.
