Need help with replacing a m42
« on: March 17, 2009, 06:29:07 PM »
Will a m42 out of a 95 fit in place of my m42 91 e30? They look different but apparently are the same engine? Is it just the intake manifold thats different or are things like the crank sensors and what not different like comparing the m44 to a m42?

I really need to figure this out.

You need to run all your 91 electronics on the bare 95 motor to make it a simple swap.  This means wiring harness, ecu and all sensors.  You need to swap your 91 intake manifold onto the 95 motor.  You do not have to swap the accessory drive system unless you want to, afaik.

If you decide to swap to your original accessories let me know, I would be interested in buying '95 parts.

Only the early (1st year or so) E36 had the M42. The later 318i/is/ic/ti/Z3 had the M44, which is a modified version of the M42. I don't know what all of the differences are, but it's a 1.9, rather than 1.8.

I know that the header is different (I have an M44 header that I can't use because it doesn't fit in the E30). Maybe the M42 header would work on the M44. Maybe everything as noted previously would still work, but it you'd be best off consulting with a BMW tech before buying an engine that you may not be able to use.

I have a 95 which is the last of the M42, I dont know what is really that different between it and the M44 besides the extra .1 liter, but Id rather stay OBDI w/the M42 anyday.
