im trying to take the water pump off my m42. i cant figure out out how to take the fan clutch off, or if i even need to do so. i've got all the blolts that hold the pump on itself but i cant get the allen bolt out, because the pully doesnt move far enough forward bofor it touches the fan clutch so i cant get the whole bolt out. so i need to get the fan clutch off so i can slide the pully off the pump shaft. Whats the proccess to taking the water pump out?. how do i get the fan clutch off?
any help would be much appreciated

http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp?action=PROD&PROD=BMW-1703-T2&CTMP=1is an example of the pair of tools available at a reasonable price. You turn the wrench toward the left front fender to loosen and remove the fan clutch. I suspect since you're trying to replace the water pump you've already removed the fan shroud, so getting the fan out will be easy. I was able to get the fan out without removing the shroud as there is just enough room to take it out if you bring it toward the right side of the vehicle. When you put it back on you'll be able to spin it on by hand, then use the wrench to complete the installation.
From the Chilton manual for water pump removal:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system.
2. Remove the fan. Remove the drive belt and the water pump pulley.
3. Remove the pump mounting bolts.
4. Screw 2 bolts into the tapped bores and press the water pump out of the cover uniformly (although I've also read stories of people just wiggling the pump back and forth and having it fall out that way).
To install:
5. Lubricate and install a new O-ring.
6. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts to 6.5 ft-lbs (9 Nm).
7. Install the pulley and tighten the bolts to same torque as above.
8. Install the belt and fan.
9. Connect the negative battery terminal. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
Have a blessed day as you might need it as you work through this.
