Volvo 740 or Mitsu Starion Turbo?
« on: February 22, 2009, 10:35:03 AM »
I'm obviously new and need to wrap my head around the dizzying array of turbo names and numbers. My local yard has a Mitsu Starion and Volvo 740s that I can pull stuff off of.
I'm wondering what people thought of the direction to head with a super budget build... like just tinkering and no more than 7psi on a semi-daily driver, M42.

I know the 740 has a lot of items I can snag, but is the mitsu turbo a better find? (the intercooler is already pulled on it, boo)

Also, what is a decent price to expect at the 'yard? $50, $75? More?

try to get the Mitsubishi made turbo off of an older Volvo 4cyl car, t3 flange (i think) 8psi wastegate and water cooled, its a smaller turbo so it should spool up pretty fast but still supply plenty of volume

Mitsu turbos all the way, they will run for more than 100K unlike all the ebay bullshit. MHI turbos are just as good as the big name brands if not better for reliability. The starion I believe has a 13G, the mitsu turbo you want is the ones that came on the 1G (90-92.5) talons, lasers and eclipses. Those came with the 14b, which is a killer turbo for quick spool, its oil and water cooled and you can buy them for $150 in mint condition from a DSM forum or what not around you locally. This turbo will make 280HP at 20psi. I ran a 13.8 on one in my AWD at only 15psi.

So what is the price of rebuilding a turbo? Is it not worth it to buy from the JY and then break it down, clean and replace parts and put back? Or is it better to just buy an already rebuilt one?

I'll have to look into the mitsu section of the 'yards for more options. Thanks for the advice.

^ Dude was right about the starion being a 12a, either way its a shitty turbo. Usually turbo rebuild kits are around $100, but you have to have someone build it that can balance it. Go to http://www.gpopshop.com/mitsubishikits.html for mitsu rebuild kits (tdo5h). Dont worry about the rebuild, just get the 14B for no more than $150 (I have gotten some for $150 with under 10K on them), and just check it for shaft play.

I would avoid a junkyard turbo, if something was wrong with the engine in the car its likely that pieces from the engine got into the turbo either through the exhaust turbine, or into the engine oil which would trash the turbo internally. Or if the turbo just took a shit it would spit pieces into the intake and into the engine. Either way, you dont know why the car at the junkyard is there.

Lol.

Get one from a rear-ended car. BMW guys are so paranoid, I swear.
