E36 Modified
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:20:46 AM »
Hi everyone!
In this threat I will write you about my car for fun :D
This car will only for fun and racing. My "normal" car is an E38 (btw very nice car) so I need a car for fun (drift, racing, track). I had a E36 316 with no extras :) and I couldn't sell it for a good price, so I've decided to make something interesting of it. The reasons are few: It has no extras (very light and nothing to sorry when a get inside with the flex :D ), it has M-technic bumbs all over and it is M43 ... so the swap to M42 won't be something difficult.
     So what will happen:
    1. Stock M42 Engine inside.
    2. Modified Flywheel (5 kg)
    3. The Engine-Head and Block (cleaned and polished), some new parts so it should looks like new.
    4. What is not needed will be removed. The Battery will go Back in the trunk and problebly replaced by a Bike-Battery.
    5. Differential from 316/318 iA (it is 4.44) so the 5 gear on 7000 rpm will be app. 190 km/h. Diff will be modified to LSD (25%) , probebly OEM from E36 or E30.
    6. Brakes - Infrond stock from 320 E36 (286 X 22 Ventilated), Backward (Disk-Brakes from E36 /the stock 316 has no Disk-brakes/).
    7. 195/50/15 Toyo Proxis R888 Semi-Slicks
    8. Inside everything removed and cleaned.
    9. Strutbraces on both axes
    10. Chip with rev limiter on 7000 rpm
    11. Modified exhaust-sys, cats removed and some more modifications

So these are some of the things I am planning. I have some questions though:
   1. What should I expect as a weight reduction after removing interiour, the stuff in the trunk and the modification of the battery. The car has no AC?
   2. I've read that the OEM cams can be not as originaly mountet but few theets difference (i hope you can understand what I mean, my english is not as good as I wish). Make this modification a difference and if someone can give me some more info about that i would be very happy and thankfull.

Here are some fotos of the car:

Sweet plans!

Glad to have some more people from the European countries join up.

Keep us updated!

As for lightening, just take out all the trunk material, even the tar, the spare tire, just leave the battery. Inside, remove carpet, backseat, and tar on the floor as well. Under the hood, remove A/C (looks like it already doesn't have A/C), Shouldn't take too long. It's fairly easy to strip out an E36.

I think what you are getting at about the cams is that yes, M42 cam sprockets are adjustable, but they have no markings to indicate the adjustment.

Hi there, nice looking car! :)

1. I think I have removed about 125 kg so far but I had AC which is about 20 kg. Maybe sunroof is also included on that 125 kg (it weights about 20 kg)

2. Do you mean how to adjust cam timing? In M42 is is very easy, you only has to open cam cover and loosen 4 bolts per cam and adjust cam position relative to cam wheels and then bolt it all up. Here is a poor photo of arrangement:

The sunroof will go away too.
Yes, I ment "adjust camshaft timing" ... but I've found the information. Intake +5 degrees, exhaust stays as it is. Not good in idle and middle rev, but the car will be only for racing, so it will go most of the time over 5000 rpm.

Thanks to Boyracer I've read very good and important info about the head modifications and I will try VW Lifters (49 g) with dbilas springs and chip for 7800 rpm. I only don't know for how much RPM the OEM Cams are good? If someone can help
Dbilas offers regrind for 160 euro pro cam, so together 320.

Here is my car with stock cams and good quality chip:

You can see the power is already dropping after 6000 RPM. I am not sure it if is because of cams alone or is the intake manifold starting to restrict power.

I have 256 degree Shrick cam copies with custom chip now and engine pulls much more willing to higher but not quite to 7500 which is the limiter, more like to 7000. I have no dyno plot to show unfortunately :(

Thanks for the usefull info. I will stay with the stock cams, only little bit ajusted. The car won't be this summer as fast as I want, but as a next step I will install MS and than go for some boost. But for now I've got lots of work on the engine-head and on the car at all.

A short update:
  1. I bought the M42B18 Engine. It is from an E36, the owner says the condition is good ... but we will see :)

After some thoughts I've decided to go another road :D

  2. I bought this brand new K04 (Audi S3) Turbo for almost no $.

  Here is the Turbo-Grafik:

  I have also:
  3. Injectors: Bosch 470cc (they are from Vauxhal VRX or something like that) brand new too.
  4. Innovate LC-1 Wideband
  5. MegaSquirt (mounted in Motronicbox and use the OEM Cables and Sensors).

And I will go with M3 Brakes all around and M3 17" Rims and M3 LSD.

 Best Regards, D.S.
