M47 crank into M44 turbo..
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:07:05 PM »
Hello all,

I really dont know if is this the right place to open up this thread but here it goes..

I nearly finished turboing my m44 equiped '96 Z3 with all stock internals, neukin bottom mount mani,Tial 44mm external wastegate,HKS bov, Garrett GT3082R, 750cc RC injectors, AEM FI/C, Yonaka Motorsport intercooler,HKS fuel regulator, all custom piping, HKS carbon Ti muffler, custom clutch, etc..

I'm hoping the internals will last until i got all the parts with minimal boost (6-7 psi)..

My goal is to have a daily driveable with around 450-500hp on FW, but to reach this i need all forged internals with a M47 88mm crank..

My questions are..

1) Is there any marks, numbers or writings on the m47 crank that i could easily spot when buying?

2) I'm planning to go with pauter rods with JE pistons but just one of them must be made custom in order to reduce the cost, which one? I mean, do i have to change the lenght of the rods or pistons (not both) for the m47 crank? Specs please..

3)Is this a good setup? I mean are all parts for this engine are easy to find or am i going to suffer when searching for cams, etc..?

by the way, sorry for my bad english..

Thanks

-Ahmet

I am not sure if you can use the M47 crank in M44 engine. This is because the M44 crank has the tooth wheel (meant for crank sensor) on its last counter weight but the M47 does not have this. Thus I think it can only be used on the M42 motor.

You need crank from e46 320d with 88mm stroke , and  135mm long rods ,forged pistons on 85mm diameter or 86mm made for m42/m44 ,3mm cometic gasket . I plan to make same engine with forged wossner pistons on 85mm made for m42/m44 their geometry is like stock NA pistons
My m42 block is rebored to 85mm diameter with 0,1mm tickness between pistons and cilinders ,use rod bearings from 320d with sign
sputter on them you must use also motul oil 20W60 lemans.

he can move snsor in frond of the crank and can use wheel from m42 this mode is not that hard

Actually, i know which cars has this crank but what i need is the numbers or writings that carved on the crank.. My parts guy claims he has one but we both dont know if its the right one..

What i understand from your post is to go with the custom rods (135mm) and get all the other stuff "off the shelf"..

By the way, what will be the CR on this setup? I have kinda big turbo for this engine and I need a 9.1-9.2 CR in order to spool up from lower revs..

Is there a thread about this? Can you explain this a litle more please?

i have one crank and i will try to find some nombers on him and will take some pictures

about 135mm rods you can bay forged H beam rods made for m50b25 or m20b20 they will fit perfectly

about cr  for 400++ HP and cr close to 9:1 you will need special 102++octane gasoline with normal gasoline you can't boost safetly .On my 328 turbo cr is 9,2:1 and i boost it with 1,5 bar of boost runing with shell Vpower racing but i don't know what will hapen if i boost it up to 1,8-2 bar of boost . On my 318is turbo cr is 7,9 boosted on 2,3 bar of boost 380hp  on rear wheels againe with shell vpower racing and 15 000 km no problems with detonations or other.

Make some calculations and find what cr will you get and on the base of that result you can make corections on geometry of your custom pistons .

about sensor ,i dont know threat about muving sensor but you need some skills to do this  yourself .

pictures will be really appriciated..

Same 100 octane Vpower is sold here too and my plan for those HPs is some water or alcohol mix injection.. although, with good mapping, many of my friends says its possible without injection..

What kind of turbo do u have there? 2.3 bars is very impressive..

My garrett GT3082R is rated 600hp+ around 1.9-2.0 bars of boost but those hp s seem too far away right now..

if its done by just moving the sensor wheel from m44 crank to m47, than it should be easy for my mechanic..

for now, my 3rd rod bearing is little loose when you hold and shake it and this kinda scares me..

Thanks again in advance for both pictures and calculations..

I am getting Eagle M50 rods. They are 135mm and will fit nicely. A little lighter compared to stock M50 rods as well.

As for pistons, I bought custom pistons from Wiseco. They ae 86mm bore and 9:1 CR. Since its custom you can order any compression you like from them. Only downside is that its rather expensive. Cost me around USD1000.

I know.. going custom is expensive but what else can i do for a strong internals.. I've been quoted around USD2000 for pauter rods and coated JE pistons with ARP hardware and etc.. but i think this combination is strong enough for 600+ hps and thats more than enough for me..

Do u have a order sheet that the pistons measurements writen on it for your custom pistons from wiseco? if u do, could u take a picture of it for me please?..

This is the piston info sheet. I don't have the order form. All I did was to tell them what engine I have, my desired bore and compression. Then tell them the stroke and conrod length. They will work out what piston I need.

I think USD2K is rather expensive though. I have scouted around and find that Eagle rods are lower in price compared to others and will take 600HP easily as well.

Hi on my 318is turbo i use turbonetics Gtk-450

about sensor you will need a 60-2 wheel from m42 and custom made sensor stand

I will take crank pictures soon
