What engine is this?
« on: June 30, 2006, 12:00:58 AM »
Bit of a strange question, but from looks alone, is this more likly to be a m40 or an m42 engine?

Thanks!

Looks to be the M40 used on E36's.  Definitely not a US model.

That's no M40 or M42 engine - look at the timing case cover. Doesn't look like any of their engines and it is sitting way too low down IMO.

At one point BMW trialled the Australian-designed 'Orbital Engine'. Maybe it is one of those?

its na m40, easily tood by the fact its only got a single cam (look at the size of the timing case)

steer clear of this engine, very unreliable one over here in the UK!

i dunno dan, my old man had an M plate e36 many moons ago which i think had the m40 (94 car - never really cared what engine it had i must admit) and it had done nearly 200k miles by the end, never gave any grief, never used any oil, was quiet and good on fuel etc. whats your reasoning for them being very unreliable dude!?
as for the engine, def a bog standard run-of-the-mill m40, with a bog standard inlet manifold without DISA, only fitted to m40s not m43s, and a bog standard plastic timing belt cover found on all of them.
