I'm sure this is a stupid question, but could someone explain to me what the "A/M" switch next to the automatic transmission selector does? I'm assuming it stands for "Automatic/Manual" or something like that, but I don't really understand it.

"A" stands for am. You use that button in the morning.

"M" stands for pm. You use that button in the afternoon.:rolleyes:

I found this in Bimmerforums...Kinda works like a "manual" trans or a steptronic trans

E36 owners manual:
This program is for driving conditions under which the selected gear is to be retained. The transmission then remains in this gear both when starting off, and during acceleration. With this program you drive only in the 3rd gear in position D.

It is advantageous e.g. on slopes, or when towing a trailer, to drive in selector lever position 1 or 2, or in winter on slippery roads in the selector position 3, which enables gentle start-offs, and prevents undesirable shifting.
