Right, Saturday.

Had a 'early' start (as in early for a Saturday 8 am

), had to get down to the local tool hire place and get an engine crane. It certainly was a flippin crane, was massive, the legs weren't too short of 2m and it could like 2 tonne only had my lil M42

Any way, got the engine on the stand (only took 2 months lol!). Earlier in the week I borrowed an impact gun and compressor and got the 'carrier' bolted to the back of the engine:

I've also gone about removing the coil pack brackets as I don't need them as I've done the COP conversion.

When I take my engine out I'll give the entire bay a rub down and re paint as its all crap tbh lol.

Finaly got my remote oil filter head fitted. Cut up some bits of Ali and took it to a local fab shop to have it welded up, gave it a paint with some brilliant red and bolted it in:

Also fitted the take off plate:

Got the car back in the garage after a big tidy up (can you tell winkeye ):

This isn't as bigger update as I was wanting to write. A local fixings supplier let me down by sending my order to their branch in Poole not Westbury. I was expecting some Loctite 272 to fit these:

And some nuts and bolts to fit my COP plate

C'est La Vie.

Also found out the injectors I bought were a bit too small:

It's been a while.

I've fitted a Wilwood 4pot caliper and 280mm disc setup with braided lines throughout:

I had a plate and spacers machined so I could relocate the alternator to the other side of the engine:

The alternator has been wired directly to the battery side of the isolator switch (below) so that it cannot spike the electrics or keep the engine running if pulled.

Gearbox will be done very soon along with the oil hoses and also the idle and breather hosing. After that it's turn the key time.

for the alt. relocation u used the original holes of the A\C right?
did u had the spacers cut in different length?

can u elaborate on the material used for this?
the plate thickness? the spacers thickens?

im planing on making the same thing in my car - but to adopt the A\C (from my old M40 engine) to the current (M42) engine

Pretty amaze all ya jobs done so far, hope you can put the SC duct into the intake manifold in good shape as well.

By the way you said you made those coolant hoses :confused: Do you mean you just bought a straight hose and bent it into that form, don’t you?

Hi Ron,

Yes is used the A/C bolt holes.

The plate was machined from 6mm aluminium, pretty high grade stuff too can't remember off hand. The spacers are all 35mm long with an 8.2mm hole for the bolt to go through, the walls of the spacers are roughly 4 or 5mm from memory.

I do have a drawing for it, send me a PM if you want it.

Hi George,

The tooling for the hoses and the hoses them selves are produced by SFS performance here in the UK (http://www.sfsperformance.co.uk) and is very costly. The coolant hose kit including the one you've pointed out where modeled from the OE BMW ones and yes, the lower hose arrowed is larger at the radiator end and then strinks down to fit the engine.

I've been having a look at the space down the back of the engine and felt comfortable enough to route my oil hosing given that there is loads of space behind there even without the gearbox fitted.

So I got both lengths worked out using 20mm conduit. Being the same outside diameter as the actual hose, it allowed me to accurately gauge the length and space required.

I got the hose lengths cut and took them to my local Pirtek as getting the unions on was a total mission. I also wrapped the pipes in spiral wrap to protect them from chaffing etc.

The hoses come out of the take off plate, ontop of the engine loom case, behind the bracket which holds the case in place, then around the back of the engine where engine out let hose goes around and under the wiring, P-clips to the filter bracket then up into the housing, the return comes out and follows the same route. It's very secure and I've tied the hoses together to keep them from moving about.

I've ordered some hosing to make my breather and idle system with so all progress.

This is it. I havn't seen anywhere else made it, silicone one, before. Most I've seen gotta use a reducer. So, I'd rather go grab it soon. :cool:

I ordered some super flexi hose from SFS Performance, to make my breather and idle hoses. The fact it flexes so well allowed me to easily bend and route the hoses. I hopefully won�t be running the engine as standard for too long, so I don't have an ICV (Idle Control Valve), this does mean that when the engine is cold, it won�t idle correctly but once up to temperature it will be fine.

Quickly knocked a bracket up to hold my dipstick tube in place too:

One evening Finite (from here) foolishly agreed to help me fit my gearbox. We managed to do it in a couple of hours and it was great to finaly have the engine sat up by itself with out a ratchet strap!!

Fitting the starter around all my new hoses and wiring was a total mission I still have the cuts from doing it.

I took the day off work and set out to get a few jobs done. I changed the gearbox oil, fitted the coolant hoses, checked the oil, stood back and thought, lets do this....

After a few attempts at turning the key, all the pressures built up and she turned over! This is the video I got of it starting. Idle is crap because the throttle was set a bit funny, I have since adjusted it and dispite what I said earlier about not having an ICV, it idles perfectly!!

Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the charger brackets as the person who was going to make them has sadly had to pull out so now my mind is wandering all over the shop.

Hi its the TOP9, I had to email them for the info on it as it wasn't listed when I looked.

I'm not sure how they fit if you have the alternator there though as it looked like it would hit.

It seems not covered in the online shop, but in their pdf it's there. Only that they wrote for 318 model 2000-2004years, that's why I asked. I supposed that it was for E46s..

I don't know the price cause in the pdf there isn't the price, but I suppose around 40 gbp without vat...

I believe it was developed for the Z3 iirc.

The price (wait for it) is �90 + VAT it may've changed so might be worth an email. Matt is the guy I spoke to was very helpful.

I'm also not going to run an Eaton, I'm now going to run a Rotrex and build a low compression engine at a later date.

first of all, kudos to you visionracingdevelopments! The engine looks amazing. can't wait to see the finished project.
I'm thinkin of doing the same thing myself when i get the money to back it. just a few questions though. Is it necessary to have the intercooler for SC kit? i thought that they were only needed to a turbo?

Wat i've been looking at doing is an engine rebuild. take the standard M42B18 engine, and turn in into a M42B21, then drop a DASC kit in it. keeping the same CR for now though. i've got a 95 E36 318iS. don't know if that makes a difference, but i was just wondering if i need an intercooler.
