?'s for those that have done the COP conversion

For those of you who have completed or did the COP conversion on your M42 - I just have some quick questions:

1) is there ANY possibility of water getting down into the spark wells if washing or powerwashing under the hood?  Many of us detail our engine bays and w/ the stock BMW cover plate, this was not really an issue - however, if that plate is no longer protecting the open spark wells, with a COP kit, can or does water get down into the well at all?

2) I see folks using different coils from different BMW's - is one type (model or coil) preferred over another and if so, what is that part #?

3) for those that have removed the original coil set up from the inner fender, how did you remove the factory bracket - did you cut it off w/ a Dremel or cutting wheel, or remove some other way?

I wash my engine regularly, and I have never had an issue.  I suppose it is possible to get water down there, but you would almost have to try.

Yes, you will want to use the coils that have a round body with 2 mounting ears.  The square ones will not fit.  I'll get the PN in a second

I used a cutoff wheel to remove it, and then an angle grinder to clean it up.

Yes it is possible to get water in the holes.  It would be nice to have some sort of rubber caps to prevent this though.

Which coil to plug boots are used? The stock ones or the m52 ones?

Just take your freshly washed car out for a nice drive. Any water that gets in there will just evaporate.

I didn't think pressure washers used that much water anyways. Like haledj said, you'd have to really try to get water in there to fill up the ports.

The COP kits should use the same boots as come on the coils.  They are from an M54 model engine.  Make sure you're getting the Bremi or Bremi type that are circular on the bottom.  The Bosch are a different shape and will not work with the kits that are most often sold on this site.

Another plug for Rob's kit. Mine arrived last week. For the average person there is no reason to do anything but get their kit. Everything is there, everything fits together correctly. The average person would be hard pressed to duplicate it for less without considering the time it would take. Now, I haven't actually run them since my engine is still dead, but wow, it looks nice.

I've already got a set of these coils, how do I go about cutting/modifying the #1 coil to make it fit correctly? Can a Dremel Tool do the deed?

I did mine with a dremel and then touched it up with a little black paint.  All those little flat plates will come off independently when you start cutting. It worked best to cut from the top down.

Power washers use really little water. A simple wash won't get much water in there.  Just don't wash it before you put it away for an extended period where you might get some rust/seizing of the plugs. Warm it up and it will evaporate away.

Bav Auto has High performance Coils that they claim increase performance, curious as to the real story, form those with experience.
