I think I'm headed toward installing a used engine. I suspect I've let the timing chain slip with resultant misery. I won't know for sure until I have the time to
check the cam timing and compression but in mental preparation for it, someone
I think posted a how to here that showed dropping the front crossmember. It seemed like a good idea for swapping the engine and replacing transmission seals, but I can't find the thread.

Anyone know where it is, or any other description of dropping the front crossmember?

If you're going to be replacing the engine, just replace all of the seals with the new engine on a stand.

Close, the one I'm thinking of dropped the engine and transmission. From memory it takes just the four crossmember bolts, the steering column and the upper strut nuts, along with the transmission shifter/driveshaft etc stuff.

From the drips under the car I have the same leaks as this thread describes. Seems like it would be much easier to get to that stuff with the trans out.

I could also do this the old fashioned way by lifting it out with a shop crane, his method just seemed cleaner, especially since I do most of this stuff without help.

For the other reply, the replacement engine will go on a stand. I just did all the front gaskets/seals with the engine in the car and I think I'd pull the engine before doing that again.
