I figured I should have replaced it when I had the head off but Nooooo I had to get in a rush and not wait for the order.

I think I'll steam clean the front of the engine before I do this, and i might as well do it along with the E36 steering rack I just got...

Anyone know of any "gotchas" in this gasket replacement? Hope there are no stripped bolts!

i would also like to know some tips as i plan to do this gasket replacement in a fe days, mine leaks like a faucet on startup

I replaced mine, it was pretty straight forward. I had to remove the alternator in order to get access to all the bolts. But everything went smoothly, I just followed the instructions in the factory repair manual. Of course now that I fixed that leak, I've got another leak from somewhere else too. Figures :mad:

Just replaced mine a few days ago... really straightforward as mentioned above.  Just remove the airbox and alternator and you have easy access to it.

No need to put it up on stands, and yes, I replaced the O-Ring as well.

I'll put her back up and out of comission for a bit as i want to do E36 steering rack, e36 shift lever with rebuild and maybe a few other clean ups

o ring?????????  are you guys talking about the filter top caps large o ring?


glad to hear it is pretty easy. i take it this is a common leak?

No, there is an o-ring AND a gasket for the filter housing body.
