Bollocks! One of my intake manifold studs is missing.
« on: December 24, 2008, 04:28:09 AM »
Replaced my intake manifold gasket today, due to a leak on one of the cylinders.

Went smoothly, besides the giant short and spark that threatened to blow up my car (I was certain I'd pulled the battery :o) that subsequently seems to have buggered up my security system brain (all the lights flash for about 30 seconds whenever I unlock my car ).

Anyway, after replacing all the horribly cracked vacuum line and buttoning everything up I discovered, to my horror, that one of the two studs that holds the top half of my DISA manifold to the bottom half had backed out of it's spot and is now completely gone. To make matters more interesting, I popped down to the auto parts store and found that they don't carry M7 studs or bolts.

So, what I've done until pelican parts ships me a new stud and nut, is to kinda sorta patch things up with a 1/4" bolt, so at very least the ICV doesn't fall off. The thread pitch is all wrong, so it's not very tight. The other two bolts/nuts are torqued to spec.
Being the holidays, I kinda need my car, and, being the holidays, I don't see the replacement part arriving in the mail anytime soon. Am I safe running just two DISA bolts? All they do is maintain a tight seal between the upper and lower mani, right? Worst case, I have a small vacuum leak and make smog while loosing some power, right?

Help? :(

Started her for just a sec, to make sure that spark didn't kill any electronics (other than the freaky security computer she seems just fine - thank god I pulled the main relay before getting started!) but shut it down almost immediately, since the silicone gasket dressing I used needs about 24 hours to cure.

She started up and idled just fine, as far as I could tell...

Check to see if there's an Ace Hardware store by you.  They have THE best selection of hard to find metric hardware.  They'll have M7 bolts for sure, hopefully the length you need.

None in my area, I'm afraid. The awesome blokes at pelican parts seem to have already shipped the new stud and nut, so hopefully I'll have her back together by friday or saturday at the latest. :)

Still wondering if I can put a few miles on her here and there in the meantime... :o

these forum hackers like schobits211 seem to pop up at many formus these days, maybe the auto approve function should be disabled for new users?
