Summer tire recommendation?
« on: December 10, 2008, 05:20:27 PM »
Size will be 225 / 50 / 15 and I've not seen anything on the Tire Rack site that really grabs me.  Mike Miller reviewed the Toyo T1-R's in the current Roundel and gave them high marks, though he stated he thought they were a little pricey.  Any input will be most welcome, as I will be researching tires thoroughly for the upcoming "non-blizzard" season.

Both are superb tires, I agree, however neither is available in 225/50/15.  Hence my challenge.

Toyo T1R, I have them in a 225/50/r15 in the rear and I love them, lots of grip, and the more they wear the stickier they get. I bought mine from edgeracing.com for like $90 a piece

Have you considered falken Ziex ZE-912's ?

Rated #1 all season performance tire by Consumer Reports, and Grassroots Motorsport rated it #1 out of 5 tires tested on their Miata test car.

I also use the ziex ze-912's Remember though, they are all-seasons, not summer tires.  They are sticky for an all season.

I will have to pay more attention to falkens, for years i have never really liked their tyres.
Always seemed like tons of road noise, any input in that dept?
Thanks!

I have the Ziex's too but have worn the inner edge due to high negative camber on the right front. Switched the worn tire to the rear and they do make quite a bit of noise now. Handle great, though.

I've got the Consumer Reports Tire Ratings as of November 2009.  The Falken Ziex ZE912 was overtaken by the Michelin Primacy MXV4.  The michelin is $122, vs. $70 for Falken.  The falken received the highest rating for dry and wet braking, whereas michelin received the second highest.  I wonder if the falkens are actually cheaper in terms of total cost, because they received the lowest rating in tread life and second lowest in rolling resistance.  The michelins received the second highest and highest, respectively.
