H&R cab-specific springs on sedan?
« on: November 28, 2008, 10:19:38 PM »
I'd like stiffen up my ride with a minimal amount of drop. I'm going to use the H&R Sport 50406 front springs. It's my understanding that since the 50406s are for the 6 cylinder cars, I'll get less drop with them on my M42.

As for the rears, I'm planning on using what I believe are H&R Sport cabriolet/iX springs. My logic is that I will get less drop with them because they are made specifically for cabs and iXs which are heavier in the rear.  WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Also, the rear H&R cab springs I bought (used) are blue and have "19-03-BMW" printed on them. Googling it seems to support that they are cab/iX sport springs in the Euro market, BUT, the U.S. sources indicate that cab/iX sport springs are 50407s. Can anyone confirm that the 19-03 and 50407 are the same spring? Thanks.

whatabout using the H&R OE springs. Their not much of a drop, but are stiffer than the factory sport springs.

/\ I agree with that guy. Check them out.

You're correct in the front springs will drop less with the M42.

The rears I'm not sure on.

IIRC, H&R doesn't manufacture any sport springs for my '92 318ic.  I went with Intrax.

We actually had a 325is with cabrio-specific springs on it.  They're on my cabrio now. :D  It resulted in a ridiculous amount of rake due to the fact that the cabrio has another 100lbs+ over the rear wheel versus a 325.  The fact that a cabrio 325 outweighs a 318is by over 400 lbs would have me very concerned about using cabrio springs.

I will also suggest OE sports (50404.55's). Or you could opt for M3 springs.

Here's how the OE sports look on my car,

I finally got around to my suspension upgrade using these springs. My car is a DD, so I planned my suspension build to retain ride quality and comfort, while being a capable performer when pushed. I also wanted a better stance, but at a height that's safe for the mean streets of L.A.

So here is what I ended up with:
-- Koni shocks/struts -- 8641-1210SP front, and 80 2641Sport rear. These are the m-technik, ie., lowering spring version.
-- H&R sport springs -- 50406 fronts and euro cab springs (19-03). I went with six cylinder front springs and cab rear springs in order to avoid the reverse-rake I've seen with H&R sets.
-- UUC sway barbarians along with Turner rear and AKG front swaybar tab reinforcements
-- AKG 80A subframe bushings
-- OEM RTABs and m3 offset CABs
-- TCK street RSMs with Z3 reinforcement plates
-- oem front and rear spring pad

The end result is the ride exceeds my expectations in comfort, it corners nice and flat, and it's tight as drum. And I love the stance, no reverse rake and no excessive forward rake. Yes, there is wheel gap so it won't win any stance awards, but I don't mind it, and it's pretty equal in the front and back.

Before - with M3 springs

After
