I have a Magnaflow cat, Magnaflow muffler and I cant decide on whether to get a resonator or now. What size piping should i go with, 2.5" or 2.25"?

Looking for the most Euro sounding setup.

To be frank, it can be pretty hard to get the M42 to sound not raspy.

I have Magnaflow Highflow cat, 20" glasspack (does nothing), and Magnaflow 14816 muffler and it's raspy as all get out.

I think if I took the glasspack out and threw in some kind of chambered muffler in its place, that would help out a great deal.

I believe mine is 2.5" piping.

I have wrapped my headers all the way to the cat and she is stock until the muffler. I put on a Dynomax. It sounds quite at idle and deep and throaty at higher rpm's. I wrapped my headers after that . Wrapping improves exhaust velocity which made my exhaust sound meaner. Try the Dynomax. You'll probably like it. Good luck.

I'm doing the exact setup you are but adding a resonator. Going 2.25" piping. Also will be changing the header since mine has a leak or two I think and I don't want to pull it and have it welded somewhere. Just going to by a normal length header off flea bay to replace it.

Why not find a stock exhaust manifold to replace your bad one? I wouldn't think that it would be very expensive to find used? I just wouldn't want to chance a downgrade - everyone says the stock m42 headers are as good as it gets.

if you go stock piping and just hack that heavy ass muffler off then weld a dynomax hiflo welded in there it sounds awesome my mom says she always knows when i'm coming to her house because my car sounds like the ups truck but when you really get on it it really opens up to a nice tone not really raspy but it is really hard to find a set up thats not going to sound raspy because after all its just a 4 cylinder oh yeah you also get some good horsepower gains by doing this because you not changing the length of your exhaust your not making the piping bigger your just changing the muffler to allow a little more flow which does not affect the scavenging of your exhaust gases so you will still have that mid range power.

p.s. you want to go 1/4 inch size over what ever your exhaust piping is for the muffler size it will get you that deep tone you are looking for

Do you have a sound clip? You say it sounds good, but if I wanted my car to sound like a UPS truck, there would be a UPS truck in my driveway. I want BMW sound baby!

So you are saying that if I have 2.25 piping I should get a 2.5 muffler? I have never heard this.

I am going to go without a mid muffler of any kind and see what I think. I will see if I like what I heard later.

Should I get like a 4" short muffler from magnaflow or something? like this one below:

Could I do something like this or would a need like an actual resonator? What if I chopped off the OEM resonator and put it between the cat and muffler?

I've heard this gives undesirable sound.

People don't listen:

That muffler is basically jsut a glasspack, and I have said that I have one.

It did absolutely nothing.

If you want some kind of muffler before the final muffler, get something chambered.

Magnaflow mufflers are loud. They are just straight pipes with a little sound insulator around it. My theory is that if you put some kind of chambered muffler after the cat and before the Magnaflow, then that will produce a nice sound. If you don't it's the closest thing to having straight pipes without having straight pipes.

I drive my car daily, and it is loud. Most of the time I don't mind, but often it gets quite drone-y and irritating.

yeah it sounds like the ups truck idling in your drive way its a super deep tone any other muffler combo i have seen and heard is raspy. ITS A 4 CYLINDER! at super low rpm under stress like say i'm to lazy to down shift you almost get a little gurgle like an sti. the .25 over size gives you a little deeper throatier sound you see this common on most GReddy exhaust and performance exhaust companies. as of taking out the mid pipe i have no idea what it will sound like but it will probably be raspy

Stock exhaust manifolds are too expensive... and from what I can tell the ones sold on ebay are quasi-copies of the stocker but in stainless. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I am talking about the normal length ones not the long tubes obviously.
