Monday morning I started my 94 318i to go to work. After about 10 seconds, at idle, I heard a loud rattle, and then the car shut off.....not good. I then tried to start it and it was locked up tight....again not good. It sounded like a rattle from the timing chain, and I was hoping that one of the timing chain guides let go. I opened up the oil cap and saw plastic, so I figured upper guide???. Just to be safe, this weekend I started pulling spark plugs. I came to the last plug and noticed the electrode broken off. So I decided to take the head off, the accompanying pics are what I found.

I know one piston is a loss, so I was thinking about honing the cylinders and installing new pistons, and replacing the head. If anyone has a good rebuilt head laying around, let me know:)

You have the M10 engine. I'm not sure how similar those are to the M42. But sorry about the damage.

Maybe you should just upgrade and swap in an M42+getrag 240. They come up for sale very regularly - I think there are some now in the for sale section.

How can you tell it's an M10? I thought I had an M42.

I don't think they had M10 engines in '94.

1994 is still an M42.

At least your block is intact, as it happened at idle. Check/post in the classified section if you haven't already.

You could have a shop reman your current head for much cheaper than $725. But how do you know that your current head is shot? This isn't an over-heating issue, I doubt the head sustained any real damage, besides the valves, retainers, and obviously the timing components. If you aren't up to the rebuild just find a low miles M42 out of another e30 or e36 and swap it in, there are tons of people swapping out perfectly fine M42s for 24v motors all the time. Find a decently low miles one, replace the timing components, check for problem areas such as the upper pan bolts, and throw that bish in there.

The head surface is ok, never had an overheating issue. I know for a fact that 4 valves will be replaced, and I'm going to replace the lifters as well (146k Miles). I'm working on disassembling the lower end now. Any tips on crank bolt removal?
