Water leaking from the water pump
« on: November 11, 2008, 01:38:06 PM »
My car had slowly been leaking water and it wasnt enough to matter at first and I live in the city and never had a chance to get under and check it but figured it was the radiator but then it started overheating really bad when i drove about 20 miles and i noticed that water and steam were spweing out of the thermostat so i replaced the thermostat and seal but it was still leaking from behind the waterpump pully so I pulled the water pump and it was still in good condition and the o ring didnt look bad so i put some sealant on and put it back in and now it is still leaking.  When I first pulled the pump all the bolts but 1 were hand loose and I tightended them down and did everything and have no idea why it is still leaking.  I'm going to try a new o-ring.   Any other suggestions?

Is the seal on the rotating shaft leaking and that's where the water and steam are coming from?

I dont know i'm going to try and replace the o-ring first because i cant see exactly where the water is coming from because I can only see that close with the radiator out and no water is being circulated with the radiator out. Its a nice waterpump so I dont want to replace is without having to.

Isn't the water pump like $30 or 40 bucks?  I'd change it for peace of mind.  Sounds like it is leaking from the shaft...

There are internal seals that can give out on the pump. Thats how mine went.

I bought the o-ring and was going to try and change that cause its a "high performance" water pump and shouldnt go bad and is also more exspensive but as I pulled the radiator and fan out I saw water coming from the shaft so I put my order in for a new water pump.  It was 60$ from bavauto by the way. Hopefully it comes today and I can throw it in and get back up and running.
