M40 clutch info needed.
« on: October 22, 2008, 01:25:57 AM »
  After trying to get a clutch for most of the week, I finally figured out why it's been such a pain. :(
Someone before me was nice enough to put in a M40 flywheel & clutch. I wish I knew that sooner.
( If it wasn't for Cobra Jets link to Motortraders last may, I still wouldn't know).
Again, as always, my questions are answerd at 'the club':D My humble thanks!!! :)
I am wondering what make/ model/ year/ clutch kit I need. The write up said any M40 was a straight swap, but I don't know enough of  bmw's history to know which cars they came in, so I don't know what to order.:o
If anyone knows and wouldn't mind shareing, I would greatly appreciate it.
Here's a couple of pic's incase I'm wrong about it being from an M40.

Any info, comments, help, etc... is greatly appreciated. :)
  Thanks !!!!

The M40 engine came in the following models:
88-91 E30 318i
88-91 E30 316i

In the E36s, the 8-valve engine is called M43, which is basically the M40 engine, it might have the same flywheel though...
Check part numbers on realoem.com

The clutch used is the same one as a 1991 318is NON-AC clutch. You should be able to find a listing for it. I have the same set-up. You should have the flywheel lightened and balanced while it's out. Mine is down to 17 lbs. I believe the stock unit weighs 22.5 lbs.
