Author Topic: Please help!..Again.. (Read 4814 times)

Hey guys and girls, we have another case of 318is gremlins driving the owner nuts. :rolleyes:Heres a breif run down.

The car currently has 138,500 miles on it and I just got it back last week after a head gasket/ head replacement job. I did what the shop owner told me and kept the car below 4500 to 5000 rpms just so I could give the car a break.

I never really beat on the car, but like many others on this forum, like to have some fun once in a while.

The car went in with a rough idle and the shop found a cracked head. It was replaced and the car ran great even right after start up.

Now this gremlin has raised it's ugly head again... Once the car is started, and even after warming up, it bogs off the line. I can have my foot to the floor but there is no response until a few seconds later. Before, antifreeze was getting into the third cylinder, killing the power, there is no reason for this now!:mad: I get laughs from all my friends and staff in the school parking lot and it drives me up a wall.

After the car is shut off and still warm, the car still has this problem.

My thoughts:

1) AAARRRGGGHHH!:mad:

2) WHY ME?!?!?:confused:

3) The clutch seems to be going, could this be the problem of not getting the car to go off the line?

4) I need your help.

Any help would be great, all thoughts welcome.

Is it setting any engine codes?

Clutch slip is easy to diagnose. If the tach is climbing and the car isn't accelerating, the clutch is slipping.

There are no engine codes anymore, and the clutch does not slip, but the car grinds into reverse, 1st and second even after pumping the pedal a few times. The idle problem still happens and I can't seem to shake it off.

is the intake boot from the maf to the throttle body cracked? or your maf is broken or you have a vacume leak some where other wise check your spark plug wires if they are arching

Sounds like it could be a maf issue, how does it idle

It idles great! I just got it back from the shop today, and it is still doing the same thing. Bogging when it first starts and grinds every gear from first to third. Once the clutch warms up though, it seems to not have this problem.

Grinding has gone away, seems to have cured itself. The studdering/ cutting out seems to only happen when car is started up warm. Cold startups are not a problem. What would cause this besides an ICV.

lack of fuel/air...bad ecu, bad o2 sensor...many diffrent things.

welcome to the club on this prblem...many of us have it..some worse than others...

This happens to me too. I'm over it though, because my car runs way too damn good after the little problem. As for the clutch, check your brake fluid. If it's low fill that sucker up and pump the brakes. I had a leak in my clutch causing it to leak fluid. Got that fixed and it's perfect now.

Check your coils and plug wires. I had a problem that sounds very similar to yours, and it turned out to be a bad coil wire. My clutch was also going bad, so the problem wasn't as apparent, but it would bog badly but if I kept throttle input stable it would eventually decide to start firing on all 4 and pick back up. I would inspect all of the wires carefully, and test each one by removing them one by one and seeing how the engine reacts, it should stumble then recover, if it is bad, it will make no change at all. If your tranny was grinding going into gear, I would make sure your clutch slave is bled well, I have also had the same problem. If you are absolutely sure there are no vacuum leaks, my money is on a bad coil or plug wires.

I have already filled it up, and bled the clutch and the brakes. Everything there checks out.

Jimmy Jewis: Thanks for your input. I will check that once I get home today. Hopefully that solves most of the problem when the car is warm.

sounds like a vacume leak or your spark plug wires for sure

It can't be. Hoses are all new and I have babied the car since the replaced head and gaskets..

ok so the car bogs off the line no matter what engine temp and does this every time you take off from a stop??? am i getting this right? if this is so i had this problem with my car and it was the spark pulg wires arching to check that grab a spray bottle with water with engine running spray your wires from coil all the way to the plug it self and if they are arching you will be able to see little blue sparks.
