I put a E30 6 cylinder rear end in my car and i can go 60 in first gear... not that i ever do. The difference between 318i and 318is.. at least in e30 is 4 door vs 2 door and also "better" suspension, sport seats and shadowline (for the IS) Probably a few things i missed but you get the basic idea.

I still can't get over the fact you are a Chevy guy in Germany.. you must get as much shit as us BMW guys in the states get.

Remap the ECU to rev to 7200rpm and it's easy, lighten the flywheel and learn to change gear faster and you're away! M42's don't have a lot of torque so the lower final drive of the diff is a godsend.

Sorry. Fuel economy, quiet cabin and ease of use are far more important to me than revving the nuts off this engine. The 3.64 differential was a vast improvement in every respect including real world acceleration. The car should have had this differential from the factory.

Yes but i think he meant by having that steep of a gear forces you to shift right before you hit 60mph hence the crap 0-60 times of the M42 cars. At least thats the opinion on the internet...

Bingo.
Sold but not forgotten

This is whats wrong with your car.

Fair enough, I can still get 35mpg mixed driving in my car, it's not massively noisy (4000rpm @ 80mph). I enjoy fast driving on twisty roads so the shorter diff seems to suit my needs, plus that and I'm hauling the extra weight of a touring. A lot of people here in the uk who use their iS's as their daily haul have taller diffs for the exact reasons you mentioned, but a lot of them have other cars as weekend toys, mine has to do both as I'm a poor apprentice, so for me the 4.27 is a good compromise.

Also, you say your car is a German spec 318i? That means it's got a single cam M40 engine. About 20bhp less than an M42. Worn cam shafts and noisy hydraulic lifters are a common problem with these engines.

The camshaft in the M40 is easy as pie to swap, you can do it without removing the head! Lots of bits and it gets a little fiddly some times but more time consuming than difficult. If you can find an M42 however, it's a very simple conversion, I did mine in a few days, and it was the first real thing I'd ever done to a car bar oil changes and spark plugs :D

And yeah, UK here.

fair enough. but as someone mentioned, its easy to chip and attain 60 with a bumped redline.
