fabric spray paint... very nice
« on: October 11, 2008, 03:57:47 PM »
So i'm working on my interior... picked up some e30 recaro seats for my 318i  they along with my bench seat are getting recovered.. black sides and a blue fabric middle section.  the original intior colour was a light blue... i'm working on changing all that...  i'm still looking for some black 4dr panels to replace the blue ones. No i will not use the vinyl/fabric paint for that... however... i did use it for this....

after first coat...

after second coat....

final coat...

it came out much better than expected... i'm thinking about doing the same thing to the carpet...

It looks like it came out pretty well. The only thing I'd worry about is how it holds up.

The carpet goes through a lot more stress than the rear deck shelf and it would suck if the friction put on the carpet would rub any of that paint out.

What are you doing about the headliner?

for now i'm going to keep the headliner as is... its a light grey and in good shape.

after the 3 coats and a couple hrs after the final coat...  I was checking out the final result.  The fuzz was still there, at first a little stiff, very little.  But after a while it worked in.. and at no point did my fingers go black or any signs of transfer.

I'm pretty sertain that the spray that i used is more like a dye than a paint.  Therefore i don't believe that the black will rub out.  And just to be sure... i have brand spanking new bmw floor mats :)  medium grey :)

mind you its not as soft as before... but it is far from hard and crusty.  keep in mind that the spray is a dye not a paint

when i get a chance i'm going to take another pic... i noticed some dye run off under the deck this shows that its a dye and not a paint and i'll see if i can take some pics that show how its still soft...

ok here some close ups of the part.. you can see on some of the pics that there is still some softness around the corners.

also you will see where the dye has leaked through

also before you dye it make sure that the you "fluff" up the fabric so that there are no flat spots.. i did this by running a vaccuum over the fabric.

Looks really good man. Where did you buy that dye?
I may have to do the same thing to revamp the back shelf. Its
a little faded.

Do you plan on pulling the carpet out to try it any time soon?

There is a store here in Canada called Canadian Tire thats where i got it.. i'm pretty sure that any automotive parts store in the U.S. that has a paint department will carry this product.

The pruduct is:

Dupli-Color
high performance Vinyl and Fabric paint

I looked up on their site where they sell this product.. click on the link to see which stores are close to you http://dupli-color.com/solutions/wheretobuy.html

I'm going to see my car tomorrow at the body shop.. i have some parts to drop off :)  while i'm there i'm going to ask if they don't mind me coming in to dye the carpet.

no worries...  did you get a chance to try it?

I wasn't able to do the carpet in my car.. so i'm going to wait till next summer when its warm out and i can do it outside.

I installed the rear deck with some replacement speakers.. nothing special Clarion 170w mid woofer for the time being ( i had them collecting dust in my room for about 3 years)  I forgot my camera so i wasn't able to take some pics... but i'm heading into the shop on monday to drop off the new door mouldings and i'll take some pics of the rear deck and the progress of the car...
