Which engine is in a 1997 318is? It is the 1.9 liter I know that much. Is that still an M42? Are these still good cars even though they are not E30's?

M44
I have a 95, so it's an M42. But the manifold is different to that of an E-30 M42

Is the M44 as good an engine as the M42? Is the 1.8 vs the 1.9 the maid difference? I also heard the intake is different???

The M44 is good, it was designed for the E36 as it is a heavier car than the E30. It's intake and cam setup is more for midrange torque than the top end the M42 is known for.
Other than displacement, some internals are slightly different (nothing major as I recall) and the intake, they are similar.
Power output and behaviour are different however.

M42 = OBD I M44= OBDII
the m44 is like said a good motor. and has the nice mid range torque but the m42 revs higher and is more tune-able.
