I'm going to put the head back on my m42.

The Bentley manual references a "oil check valve" in between the head and block. I do not remember mine having one. The head I'm putting on didn't come with one and the old head is gone. It looks from the picture like a traditional dowl, except that it fits in the main oil feed right in the deck of the block.

Did your car have one too?

IIRC that is an e36 only part.

Yes, that's an E36 part.

If I did my engine over I'd go ahead and install one. BMW also upgraded other parts on the M42.

well when i rebuild mine, the engine had the oil check valve, but it is in the lower block timing case part. So you should be good. If you removed the lower case part, then it might be worth it. I didnt when I did mine.
