So what's the risk of running cam and crank gears that are worn? Mine are worn a bit and I'm putting in a new chain this weekend. I don't see how it could ever jump a tooth or anything.

i wondered the same thing as i just got an m42(175kmiles) swap and want to refresh the timing chain, tensioner and rails, but cant find the sprockets on BMA, Pelican or germanautoparts. they are a little bit worn, just on the edges, chain is tight, very little play when the crank is turned.

anyone know where to buy the sprockets? otherwise im not gonna worry about it either....

So it's play in the chain that's the main concern with worn teeth? Premature wear on the chain is the issue?

well your chain is not going to be matched to your sprockets

i found the tensioner sprocket on http://www.bestpricecarparts.com , but no cam or crank sprockets.

I didn't think my cam gears were worn either, but I think they were a main reason my timing chain assembly sounded the way it did.. When I took em off they were really sharp looking, and the new ones had an almost squared end on each tooth lol needless to say I'm happy I got the cam gears as well as the crank gear... I got mine from bma,, call patrick and he'll hook ya right up

if ican get the part nukbers i can search for them on the BMA site. perhaps ill tryin get them off the motor, cam sprokets i can see, the crank sprocket light take a day or 2.

Crankshaft sprocket - 11-21-1-247-338-BOE - $61.00 (1x req)
Camshaft sprocket - 11-31-1-721-887-BOE - $48.25 each (2x req)

Seeing as you have found the idler sprocket on http://www.bestpricecarparts.com I would buy it from there as it is only $61.70 compared to Pelican Parts $133.50, your saving big time. And also the above parts are special order - no refund, and have about a week waiting time. For looking up part numbers, check out RealOEM.com for future reference. heres what my cam gears look like click on a junkyard engine i just picked up to try and get my car running so i can drive down to school in a couple weeks. Yes the whole idea is sketch but i think that these gears are looking pretty good. Engine supposedly has like 125k on it. how many miles does yours have and what do they look like?

Those gears actually look really good,, that's what my new ones looked like.. the ones in there were a point,, sharp as a knife lol good find on that motor

whatd you pay for it?
My engine ticked 197k when I finally got to replace everything.. next is clutch, 19# injectors, hose replacement with valve cover gaskets... should hopefully get another 100k out of it after that

yeah i figure if it lasts 100 miles it will last 100k miles. I think some of it might be to do with the year though. I bet that the gears were all once pointy then they revised the part.

I got it for 700 with a 90 day warranty, and it came with all the e36 manifolds and the full wiring harness.

I have been having the same timing, chain slipping problem...I put everything back together and TDC everything. On start car idles then dies, what ever the case seems like the chain keeps slipping, all parts look good...but everything looks good covered in oil. Anyone in the tri-state area good with m42 timing etc., and willing to replace all parts form
