Author Topic: Removing crank pulley without flywheel hole access? (Read 3077 times)

I need to replace the front crank seal but the Downing Atlanta supercharger would have to come off to get to the flywheel lock hole. That isn't a huge deal but I just had it off to replace some broken hoses and I'd like to not repeat that a week later.

I'll also have the radiator out which might give me enough room to get an impact wrench on it, but other than that is there another safe way to hold the engine while removing the bolt?

I've seen the wedge the breaker bar and bump the starter suggestion but I'm not brave enough to try that.

If I am thinking of the right area... there is an alternative to the flywheel pin.
According to http://ee1394.com/bmw/docs/factory/repair/en/index1.htm Engine Section 11-14/42.4 for removing the vibration damper, there is a special tool 11 2 170 which bolts to the front of the engine and holds the vibration damper in place so that the crank bolt can be loosened. The tool is basically a bar with a pin feature which interfaces with the vibration damper notches to prevent rotation. Pelican parts has a holding tool for the crank.

Thanks, from looking at that I'm guess that I can probably drill a couple of holes in some angle iron and bolt it in place of a couple of the pulley bolts.

Alright, I put one hole in a piece of steel and bolted it to the pulley and then held that with one foot while removing the bolt with a breaker bar. That went fine.

But, I can't get the pulley off. The long maintenance how-to says to light pry the pulley off. I have the pulley from a 92-93 that is 1/3 serpentine and 2/3 v belt. The outside did come off easily but the back seems to need a puller of some sort.

Anyone know if it does or am I gently not gently prying enough?

Ok, what should happen is you must first remove the 4x or 6x 13mm pulley bolts, then the actual hub should slide off the woodruff key. If it doesn't you will need to keep prying or use a 3-way jaw puller but you will need to put the big crank bolt back in, so that the puller will work.
