Finished up my new timing chain,, did the whole shebang, water pump, t-stat, roller, rails, tensioner, gaskets, cam gears, crank gear, and of course the chain lol
Anyhoo,, fired right up, but there's a weird whirring noise now.. sounds like its coming from the intake manifold(when I put my ear on the top of the manifold).. doesn't seem to affect driveability or anything, just pretty annoying.... Its sounds almost exactly like a supercharger lol Any ideas? Anyone ever ran in to this before?

There a number of people that have encountered this noise after replacing everything in the timing system. The whining sound is annoying particulary at <3000RPM. I am not 100% sure, but I think it is the tensioner piston being installed in the uncompressed position. (That's how I installed it) I will post back soon regarding this theory as I am awaiting a new tensioner piston. I hope a new compressed tensioner piston will fix it.

What about you? How did you install the tensioner piston? (compressed or uncompressed?)

I installed it as per the manual.. As you hold the new part in your hand, its in a 'transport' mode.. you're supposed to knock it on a solid table and unspring it.. stick it in a vise, and squeeze it past the first snap ring, then the second, then it should stay half compressed, but still revealing the top snap ring.. install, and torque to spec.. This is how I installed it.. I did have to push it a little bit and compress it for the cap to thread in... SO your answer would be uncompressed lol
Today I took it back out, reset it, and the sound remains... let me know how your luck is with installing it while still in transport mode... I'm pretty stumped to say the least.. had an old bmw tech tryin to help me out today lol he didn't know wtf was goin on either...
It sounds like a cavitating pump, but coming from the intake cam,, though most of us know that sounds, especially in a timing chain situation will travel all over the engine.... so friggin weird

Do you recall what the other people did to fix it?

Oh, and also, the noise gets worse the warmer the engine gets...
