Water pump?
« on: August 19, 2008, 03:16:01 PM »
Has anyone had any problems with thier water pumps leaking?  If so how much of a pain is it to replace?  Also has anyone had a problem with their car leaning out/ loosing power? For some reason my car will lean out and then Ill shut it down and immediately restart it then acts normal for awhile. I've got a new walbro 255 pump and fuel filter.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

replacing the water pump is very easy acept sometimes it's realy corroded and seized
in the houseing... I had some much trouble trying to free mine up the first time I decided to remove the pump via a rope around the neck of the pump  and yank away with the front bumper and rad removed... I pulled and pulled and still couldnt get it free so I hooked up rope to a fence post and backed up slowly till it poped out :) Not sure about your fuel issue...cheers!

Yup, I'm doing mine as we speak. It's stuck solid in the front cover. There are 2 tapped holes in the pump flange, designed to be used to break the pump loose from the timing cover, by screwing in the bolts that mount the pump. I've just broken off both ears of the pump, and it hasn't moved a bit. Tomorrow's another day. I'm out-of-patience right now. It looked like such a simple job..........

BTW, mine failed without any warning. No leakage, or noise. Coming home late one night, a belt started howling. I was only a few blocks from home, and kept the revs low. The bearing's so loose, I can't believe it didn't leak.

You need to screw in each of the two bolts slowly. So top bolt one turn, bottom bolt one turn and repeat. You should see the pump start to move out.

On my E36 I also used a rubber mallet and wacked the crap out of it on each of the 4 sides first, then I used the 2 bolt trick.

+1

Turn the screws, tap it with a mallet all the way around, turn screws tap it again, over and over again until its free.

I like the rope trick around the fence post trick, lol.

I did whack it all around with a mallet, before trying to screw down the 2 bolts. However, the pump's been on there for near to 20 years, and the 2 ears broke off much more easily than I expected, I suppose the old pump was brittle from all the heat/cool cycles. I'm a retired mechanic, and I've got a huge box full of tools, but I'm in process of moving, and the toolbox is currently at the old house, 40mi away. My big rubber mallets, and huge water pump pliers, are all there. So, I'm trying PB Blaster, and time, to see if that will help loosen things up. I'd use the rope & post trick, as I have a telephone pole right in front of the car. However, I also have a fully-charged A/C system, and I'll lose the charge if I have to remove the condenser. So, I'll soak, and wait, for a day, or 2.......

I had a similar problem.  I found out on the web that other people used a large pipe wrench to carefully rotate the pump back & forth a few millimeters to break it free.  At first I tried to use the jack screw holes but the flanges broke.  I then tried the mallot and hammer method with no luck.  I finally used the pipe wrench method and I was able to remove the pump.  I found out there was a significant amount of build up around the spigot fit and o-ring.  I hope this helps.
