M42 Starter Solenoid not engaging (Help!!)
« on: August 11, 2008, 02:34:09 PM »
I accidentally started the car (91 318is) in gear, no clutch. First time ever doing that with this car. (get too used to clutch safetys on my other cars) It started fine after that once. Than it started to act up. I can hear the starter spin, but it does not engage with the flywheel and start the motor. If I have someone tap on the solenoid rapidly, it will sometimes start. My battery is not that great, could this POSSIBLY have anything to do with it? I'm not looking forward to paying 100+ dollars for a new starter. So, what do I do? I have a couple of E21 320i starters, but no E30. Are the starters and solenoids the same? Could I slap the solenoid from an E21 onto my starter? Can I possibly rebuild my solenoid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
