Took the lil girl out to the track last Friday. I was pretty happy with the results. My best time in her was a 17.57, but that was my first time driving a stick car at the quarter. A buddy hit a 17.07 on his first run with her. He said he could get into the high 16's easy. This was extremely pleasing for me. If I took out my 100+ lbs of stereo should be super easy.  I always knew she felt "quick" and this was another nice way to verify that. Let me know what you guys think. It was fun as hell to bang through the gears out there... and not have her fall apart on me (I was concerned :)).

It seems to me that the 318is is not really meant to be a drag car.  To get 17's in the quarter is like not really worth going, you know what i mean?  But i bet if you dropped an M50 in there you would surprise a lot of people at the strip.  Has anyone done a run in an M50 E30?  I have a 318is and i will be doing the M50 swap.

16s 1/4 mile is borderline super car back in the early 80s

true, alot of cars were slow back then, i can't think of any fast 80's cars.  Even the Corvettes in early 80's were extremely slow.

I was wondering what my 318is would run with an M50 engine

I do some looking over on a e30 forum that covers the swap. People here besides dude8383 enjoy our peppy lil 4 cylinders. my m42 started out slow but with the process of replacing oem parts its back up to around 130-140 hp without any modification yet. M50 swap is easy hp but you will loose alot of handling.

I've had faster cars at the track, but this one was just as fun if not more fun.  I take all of my cars to the track after mods or maintanence because it's cheaper than a dyno.  Most tracks have a scale setup.  Once you weigh the car and have the quarter mile time you can get a fairly accurate rwhp estimate.

Personally i've driven a fairly wide range of cars. My "biggest" car was a Evo 8 with 440 whp and honestly it was fun at first but i do not see myself able to drive something like that anywhere but at the track. My m42 is fun because i can rev it up and go around corners sideways while still in control. I think of it as more of a drivers car and not so much of a "e-peen" or HP-peen ( made that last one up )

Its all about balance of HP, torque, weight. Throw one of those out of whack and you got yourself an uncomfortable vibrating box.

e30 M50 cars normally run high 14s, low 15s.

Ive been tempted to take my 318 to the track and see what itll run.  but after seeing that i think ill stay home.;)

Did you have traction problems?  I know on the street with 225s it takes a bit to light it up.
I think you still have 195s right?

Yep still on stock rubber size.  They get loose very easily.  

LOL and don't be afeeered to take her to the track just cuz she's slower than 90% of the cars out there.  Remember she could take 80% of them on an AutoX course.  ;)  It helps me sleep better :)
