Where have some of the OLDTIMERS gone?
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:23:07 AM »
I generally visit this site daily (if not atleast a few times a week) and have noticed some of the early members (and some heavy posters) have just left. No visits, no postings...just POOF...Anyone one know where they may have vanished to? Did they sell their cars and I just missed it?

I noticed the same thing. I realized the activity on our sweet little M42 forum has died down but most of our guys have gone full time on www.r3vlimited.com, honestly my problem with M42 club these days is there are a couple jerks that think there shit doesnt stink and everyone is inferior to them, not any of our core members or important ones.

there is a few of us still around. i think a lot of people just lurk around here now to check and see whats happening.

since there isn't so much activity, its hard to be a heavy poster, and r3v is full of entertaining garbage.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is lurking.  I do not post much anymore since I do not have any projects going on, and a lot of people can answer questions as well as I can (or better).  I cannot believe many here have gone to r3v...while there is some really good technical stuff there, it makes bimmerforums look like mature adults sometimes.

I don't drive my BMW much anymore. I got tired of the harshness of the ride on city roads. My youngest son now uses it for his DD. I recently bought a 87 300d Mercedes for my DD, and I spend a lot of time on the MB forums.
I still visit here, but not as frequently.

I must say that I have noticed a change in the topics and  the posters on this board in the last year or so. It seems to have taken on a "younger" atmosphere as new members populate the board. This is neither bad or good, it just is. Young members bring new ideas, older members bring a more conservative mindset based on years of experience. It's good to have this mix of ideas.

It would be interesting to see the ratio of members over or under the age of 30.

Just my 2 cents.

Well my opinion won’t count for much, but this site is recognised as the bench mark for information on m42’s on the majority of e30 sites. I wouldn’t be the biggest poster but I constantly reference here for everything and anything on my 318 and I know users on the Irish and uk forums come here for technical specs that can’t be gotten anywhere else….increasingly m42’s are becoming more rare on the road, especially in Ireland, so people who have them want to keep them in the best condition they can aford and with out a site like this the car would fade out.... I’ve always found people here to be friendly, genuine and willing to help where they can…..

I am gonna write this and I don't want any offense taken to it in any way. It's not bad it's just a thought:

The lurking needs to stop. All the heavy's around here that are reading a thread and thinking "I know somebody else on here can answer that question", need to post up. Because the next guy could answer will be relying on somebody else too.

I always try to write something useable. If I don't know the answer then I'll leave it, but if I know something I'll see if it will help.

This place is great, the people are helpful, and the tech is outstanding. I love it here.

There's alot of n00bs (like myself) that need a helping hand. And i don't want to go to bf.c to get an answer, and a butt reaming for not knowing it already....

Thanks guys

That was what I thought I was gonna get. I didn't want it taken that way.

I live in the northern hemishere (canada) and our winters are too cold, and frozen (atleast the last one was), and I personally don't have a garage, and have to work outside. So most of my work happens when I'm not working, when I have money, and when it's sunny out.

I didn't want an argument. Agruing online ruins threads, and forums. I just want people with answers to post up if they got them, ya know??

And I DON'T want to go to another forum. I LIKE this forum. But I'm a n00b with problems, and I gotta get my car running because I am walking for an hour everyday to and from work... and summer only lasts so long...

Listen I'm done talking, I don't want arguments, and if it turns out that way, I'd like a mod to delete my post. I'm not lashing out, I'm pleading for help.

I don't think he was arguing  ... and I'm not either :)

There is a seasonality to things, including level of interest and amount of time.  I hardly go to the MINI sites anymore even though I still drive my MINI every day because it doesn't need any work!  When I am working on the E30 this is the site I use and Bimmerclassics for a little more Canadian content.

I too like this forum and thinks its the best.  rev 3  I only stumble across when I am searching technical items or DIYs

I noticed a decrease in activity here as well. I don't know if I was quite active enough to be considered an "oldtimer," but this forum has slowed down a lot since when I was active.

Now, most of my time is split between r3vlimited and e30tech, which both have pros and cons. I must say, there is almost no toleration over on r3v if it is not something that is mainstream or "tasteful." E30tech seems to be more of the home of DIY-ers and trying out new, possibly questionable things. What I have noticed in the past year is that there are a lot more M42 guys on those sites than there used to be, as well as a lot more acceptance for the smaller motor. This, I find to be wonderful, and I have seen a lot of the other members that used to frequent M42club over there. I just kind of followed as this site slowed down. Now there are a whole bunch of new members here, and it seems to have picked up again.

As for the initially mentioned members, a lot of them have completely vanished. I can't remember seeing more than a few posts from FL318is, and febi hasn't been out much, either. Asubi was on r3v, but he's gone now, too. Zoso is still around, though, and jpod99 has his car featured on the header of e30tech. Jpod never did a whole lot here, though.

Oh well, I will start hanging around here more to see what's up and lend a hand; hopefully some of the others will return as well. I'm sure we can teach you newbs a thing or two ;)

Febi works his ass off...he is truly a work-a-holic!

I will be meeting with him hopefully in a weekend or two so that we can start things up with my swap!

I definitely noticed the board slowing down considerably and I think it has a lot to do with the regulars not frequenting the board as much as they used to. It seems that when the board first opened there was a wave of activity, new ideas, bmwman1 had a new interesting project every week, the rave of febi's MM motor, and nice fresh set of faces with things to learn. I think a lot of those fresh faces are now fairly knowledgeable themselves and the older guys have found themselves too busy. To me, as much as I could learn by reading, I always really learned the most from just going out and doing things. Also, I think the knowledge base has grown so much that a lot of common issues have been ironed and can be found by searching, but to mean, honestly, I wouldn't care if there was a thread everyday about a common problem or repair, it keeps me thinking about fixing and repairing what I have sitting outside. Thats my poorly written, half asleep, take on it.

I have never been that active here but lately with work and summer time I haven't had much time to freqent any of the forums I am semi active on, and now I mostly do a quick lurk every few days.
