Chip?
« on: June 28, 2008, 06:26:38 PM »
So I bought an ebay chip and got it today, When I opened up the ECU to my surprise I found a legit Dinan Chip, I was pretty stoked. So my question is to you, what chip should I use in my car. The ebay chip or the Dinan. Does anyone know the specs on the Dinan? The ebay chip claims +22hp, and +20lb/ft(which is obvously inflated). Thanks, Preston.

The eBay chip might as well claim 200hp gain.  If it's not a MarkD or a MarkD rip off then I'd go with the chip you have.  I guess you could try them, but I'm a little worried about eBay chips personally.

The Dinan chip does around 17 hp and 20 hp increase.  I'm not sure about the chips on eBay and I'm swayed from the numbers claimed by them.  I would suggest putting in a Mark D chip or keeping the Dinan chip.  Alpina chips are amazing... If you can find one... +24 hp  +25 TQ  If you want to get rid of the Dinan chip pm me...

Hi Preston,

I'm curious what your eBay chip actually is.  If you can lend it to me for a few days I'll ananyse it and tell you what it is, if it's got a copyright notice in it.  I'll also report back on whether or not it looks like the maps are good.

Thanks,

MarkD

I'm curious too.

About 2 years ago I got given a "Euro Group N" chip for the M42, that a mate bought off ebay just before he sold his car.  I haven't got round to trying it on a Dyno to see what difference there is from a standard chip.

I would be very cautious of anyone advertising over a 10hp without "backup" like dyno sheets (especially independant ones).

MarkD - is there an easy way to find out if a chip is any good without putting the car on a dyno?

Thanks

Cristian

Hey, Ya PM me about it, but the only problem is I'm leaving for a few weeks on July 7th, so if you PM me quickly I can ship it out before then. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a copyright it just says 1990-1991 BMW E30 318is chip on it. I would buy one of your chips, but I don't have the money right now. Maybe in a few months! -Preston

Also I put the Dinan in my dads car.

You're going to see 3-5 hp at best when chipping these cars. Probably less with a 91 ocatane Dinan chip. It's still worth it, but don't expect miracles. These are hard engines to get power out of without internal work or forced induction.

Mines custom made on a blank chip. Should give +9kW +11hp +600 rpm limiter. Theres a noticeable difference from the 4500 rpm and up all the way to 7300 rpm.

John W i think you are wrong actually. M42 is limited (downgraded) by the stock chip from factory and is not using its full potential at all. I should ofcourse do a dyno run on mine. :P

Personally, go with a MarkD or Jim Conforti chip, or none at all.  Other than that I would definitely avoid eBay chips.

Kinda limited on your poll choices. Mark D's chip is my choice.
If it's just between ebay and Dinian I think the choice is obvious if you are not budget constrained

3 to 5 hp?   It wouldn't be worth putting in a chip if that's all you get.   Ask the people that use my chip if there's only an extra 5 ponies.

didn't realize u already had the dinnan, the ebay chips are generally the same as the dinnan ones.

if cost is no issue though, i would go with a mark d.

Ebay "ProFormance" chip worked fine for me... they are all copies of other chips I believe, which ones I have no idea... but copies for sure.  I haven't dyno'd mine yet with the ebay chip, but with the Mark D one (borrowed from a friend) I got +6rwhp and +4ft/lbs over stock.  This is with the car running lean though probably do to an exhaust leak and/or the combo of my delta regrind cams.

im running a Jim Conforti Chip and it claims 15hp and around the same torque.  It really throws more power out between 3-5000rpms and bumps the redline to 7K.  Noticably more power when gunning it from 3rd to 4th gear around the 5-6Krpm.
