turbo choices for budget build?
« on: June 28, 2008, 06:11:28 PM »
Any use for volvo 740 turbos, Saab tubos or small subaru turbos? Saw several variants at the junkyard.

What are the best cars to "pillage"?

What are you trying to do, High boost or what BMW would have done. If your going to run OEM+ I'd go with anything that has a close displacement with our engines. I'm not sure about which turbos are better though. The ones with the least miles? Hopefully someone will chime in.

simple, low boost, junkyard turbo type build. Still have not done all of the research (of course) but figure i could start pulling bits like intercoolers, turbos and looking for deals on manifolds etc. something along the lines of 5-7 psi is fine. Just the project of it appeals to me although I do not weld or do metalwork. Can always learn though right?

Watchout about your compression. The m42 is a high compression motor therefore your gonna need to put in a thicker MLS most likely headgasket to get the compression down so you won't have rediculous compression when you get boost. You will have major issues if that happens.

no CR reduction for 5-7 psi... but make a compression test;) (IIRC you redone your engine, right? or it was only the head?)

I know about Garrett, so I'll leave the MITSUs to others :)
Two interesting turbos from the list:
1)
Garrett model number: TBO363 (T3 series turbo)
Compressor trim:50
Compressor housing A/R:42
Turbine housing A/R:48
HP Capabilities::275hp
Internal Wastegate: Yes
Watercooled: Yes
Wastegate setting:7 psi

2)
Garrett model number: TBO326 (T3 series turbo)
OE part #: 465446-9
Compressor Trim: 50
Compressor housing A/R: .42
Turbine housing A/R: .48
Horsepower Capabilities: ~275hp
Internal Wastegate: Yes
Water cooled: No
Wastegate setting: 7 psi

one is watercooled, the other isn't. They should have a very low boost threshould and maybe they will ran out of stream at high revs when searching over 230bhp-240bhp :)

3)
best bet (increasing boost threshold) would be a T3 60 trim from a merkur xr4ti/SVO, but you need the one with 0.48 A/R STAGE 1 turbine housing, otherwise the boost threshold will be too high as the power band;) this T3 60trim would be enough for 300whp with right tune and a good setup with right compromise between boost threshold and power

SEARCH IT WITH INTERNAL WASTEGATE. you'll save money and an external one will be overkill for only 5-10 psi of boost...

Watercooled is good but not essential.
Eventually, even if it isn't your situation, don't waste money searching T3 Super 60, in this case go or T3 60 or small T3/T4, because there are REALLY A LOT of speculators that sell standard T3 60 for T3 S60 at huge prices:D

LAST: it's true that there aren't a lot of specifical infos about M42, but the turbo route is always the same for all engines;) so check miataturbo.net section DIY TURBOS (and other honda turbo sites that now I don't remember), they are all 1.6->2.0L max and their engines are near the same when speaking of turbo sizes/spool/threashold.

if you will have a decent piggyback/ecu tune the stock CR will give you no problems. It's all about to learn how things work and then you can do everything :)

and sorry for thypos, I'm searching to have a better English ;)

I'd try and find a Mitsubishi (MHI) turbo, TD04HL-15T up to 19T (15T etc is size and trim of compressor wheel with 19T having the highest hp capacity in the TD04 range). Can be found on some Volvo T5's and "R" FWD/AWD vehicles. I think newer Saab Aero's also using the 15T turbo but im not sure.

These are much better compared to the older garrett TB03 with better spool and higher hp capacities. Also more durable at higher boost due to a 360 degree bearing instead of a 270 deg one in the TB03.

I'm using a 19T in my M42 turbo and I get positive boost at around 1600 rpm and full (14-15 psi) at ~2500 rpm :) The only turbo I would consider replacing it with would be a ball bearing race turbo.

I was near buying that one, but then I don't know why but I picked up a T3 stage1 .48turbine 60trim .63A/R compressor.. maybe because I had a neukin manifold with T3 flange and another T3 internal wastegate , maybe because I wanted to stay off boost at very low revs...:D

the only thing that scare me is that there is a "T" on my turbine housing that mean turbonetics... will report boost and spool figures in august ;)
