battery vent part number request
« on: June 25, 2008, 06:41:49 PM »
Hey guys,

I need to order the vent box that goes underneath the battery in trunk. Will also need the grommet for it. In the etk for the m42, it is not listed. I thought I found it, but received the wrong piece. The item was a small white box the size of my finger. I found this looking at an older e30 parts diagram. Maybe one of you guys know what the part number is. Also there is a rubber grommet that hold it the the body where the hole is on the body under the battery tray, behind the wheel arch.

thanks.

here is an update, I luckily found the part in perfect condition on ebay, got it with the hose and grommet. But they do not have the part number on it so I can't pass it on. I did do some work this past weekend on cleaning the battery tray area to remove the surface rust, from what I believe it to be from battery acid. I did have to make the whole a little wider to fit the vent box grommet. Nothing a dremmel couldn't fix. I used POR-15 silver after I stripped the paint and then used a basic red to cover up. A little shiny but blends in well.

Pic of vent box with hose:

Everything back together:

61211374963, Expansion Tank (pre-1987)
61211376693, Expansion Tank (post-1987)
61211377884, Hose Line (pre-1987)
61211377745, Hose Running Meter (post-1987)

It doesn't look like the 318is came with this, and I'm pretty sure mine does not have this, but rather just a grommet the tube fits into that seals it on its way through the trunk floor.

the tank collects battery acid and gases that escapes thru the vent hose, on a vented battery. A vented battery is not needed but being that the trunk is enclosed, to prevent buildup of pressure or something like that, they have it vented. If you have time, remove the battery and then the tray underneath, only 2 13mm bolts and check underneath.

ak96ss - Mine just had a hole and from searching the etk I noticed the vent box. I don't think it was stock on the 318is, but with the surface rust I know the escape route was not there. Maybe if I new about the grommet, which I couldn't find, I would have gone thru that route. Looks like I got the vent box that is one of the part numbers but the other I did order and it was the size of a half dollar, so no idea where it would get installed. Only took a little drilling to get this one in perfect.

Yes, pull the trunk gasket off the lip and check it out, I had to POR-15 mine; also yank your taillights. I never would have known this was here had I not been chasing a leak in the trunk and replaced the gaskets for the taillights.
